I'd be interested in knowing about the ongoing conditions in your area. The whole world is watching this so it would be good to have some first-hand accounts for those of us who avoid social media (and/or don't have TV service).
Thanks,
LTH
On edit: Please state your area/state if you can. Thanks.

Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)It's about a block from the Inner Harbor, and about 45 miles NE of D.C. As you can see, it's dead-quiet except for some rain showers.
The forecast says the rain and wind will gradually increase today until it's pretty bad at about 3 pm. From then until Tuesday morning is supposed to be the worst of it here. 4 to 6 inches of rain is expected, snow in the western Maryland counties and West Virginia (probably other areas too, outside of our media zone). Wind I heard was expected at 60 mph.
What's feared the most is the storm surge -- on top of higher-than-normal waves, plus high tides, plus a full moon. That, and inland flooding. Of course the wind will probably knock down a lot of trees, and cause the expected power outages.
It all depends on when it gets to a given area, and what the tides are doing then, and what the cold front to our west is doing then too. That front will be merging into the hurricane. Also it's very big, and slow-moving, so it will churn up and dump a lot of water.

Don't think I'm facing much more danger than that, but the waiting is hell.

(11,065 posts)Winds have been steadily picking up for the last hour or so but only light rain so far. Had to finally shoo the dog back in the house about a half hour ago. He's been waiting impatiently for the rain because he knows it makes mud and big puddles which he loves.

(1,977 posts)here in my area of Queens. No buses, no elevated train sounds and no planes coming into LaGuardia. Its like after a massive snow storm - I'm a city boy too used to the noise and right now it is almost as quiet as where my sister lives in rural NH. I just noticed the rain on my window too.

Currently breezy here (north winds) and overcast. Looks like the sun is afraid to come up. LOL

(7,960 posts)I went outside earlier. It's warm. The wind was up but not as bad as it's going to get and it was dry at the time. I can hear something slapping against the house.

(14,040 posts)Rain and wind picking up and chilly. More like a thunderstorm now (wind) than anything.

(13,907 posts)the winds have picked up in the last hour. They are calling for 60-70 mph gusts here today and tonight. I'm well inland and I'd hate to think what it will be like on the coast. I'm in a very rural area on a dirt road and I will definately lose power. The question will be for how long and will my road be blocked with fallen trees. I have a hard wired generator and plenty of provisions so I should be OK.

(9,137 posts)Road blocked with fallen trees = lots of firewood.
Raven
(13,907 posts)a chainsaw! But the electric company left cut up limbs along the side of the road the last time this happened.

(9,137 posts)those things seem to be for the manly males...
Even big trunks are doable also by good muscle powered saws, and by couple tricks, but takes much more time and lot of sweat (not a bad thing). Good neighbors or family members are the easiest trick in the book...
Firewood is getting more expensive year by year, but if you live in the rural area you can easily get what you need either by yourself or through your connections.

(1,095 posts)it's pretty dark and pretty quiet. We are supposed to feel the impact of the storm this evening. Yesterday we stocked up on supplies. I hope everyone stays safe.

(9,903 posts)Just starting to rain, a little windy. News people searching for damage finally were able to find a tree down, although I think maybe the pushed it over. There's been nothing that would knock anything over where I am.
