https://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-rapids/prosecutor-asks-for-grpd-shooting-video-not-to-be-released/This is awful. They wont release the video because it must be awful. If it made the police look good they would have released it right away.
The family of the victim was shown the video, their son was shot in the back of the head by police. The public needs to see the video. There was a scuffle and the officer pulled his gun out and shot him in the head.

(24,166 posts)This is my home town, people are really angry and not releasing the video is a mistake. People are running with the narrative that the victim was laying face down on the ground when he was shot in the back of the head.
I know the prosecutor in this case in passing, he's really making a big mistake. Release the tape.

(24,166 posts)The police station has barricades and fencing around it right now. This could be an ugly day here in Grand Rapids.

(24,166 posts)This is just awful. Horrific. The guy was trying to get away, but not really fighting, I saw no punches or kicks thrown by the victim, the officer tried to tase him and the victim grabbed the taser after it was discharged, then the officer says several times "let go of the taser." He was on top of the victim when he drew his gun and executed him.
This is bad. The man was lying on his stomach when the cop shot him in the back of the head. Completely unnecessary. This is going to hinge on the taser and whether or not it was still a danger to the officer if it had already been discharged.

(24,166 posts)This should be a national story by the weekend. Absolutely shook after watching. Executed.

Newly released video shows a Grand Rapids (MI) police officer shooting unarmed 26 yo Patrick Lyoya while he was on the ground & facing away from the officer! Patrick never used violence against this officer even though the officer used violence against him in several instances.

(49,445 posts)The cop was yelling "drop the taser!", for whatever that's worth. Not much, probably.
Goddamnit. He just shot him execution-style, back of the head.
Holy fuck.
ETA:
When the cop gets up, he doesn't remove the taser from the guy he was fighting with. I'm pretty sure cops remove weapons from injured people they are arresting. Toss them off to the side, for example. This cop didn't do that.
I don't know what it means, exactly. If the cop knows for sure the guy is dead, he might have left it there for evidence. Or maybe there isn't a taser at all. Or maybe the cop is in shock and forgot to.
Damn.

(24,166 posts)The guy filming the actual shooting was the passenger in the vehicle.

(24,166 posts)Several hundred people gathered in front of the police office, no incidents of vandalism or unrest were reported.
A couple points, if you watch the full videos. The officer uses the stun gun 2 times, so it couldn't be discharged again using the shooting out mechanism, but may still have been able to be used as a cattle prod.
The victim grabbed the stun gun, but never possessed it according to witnesses, it was laying several feet away when he was shot according to witnesses.
I know the neighborhood this happened in, it's not a great neighborhood, but also not terrible. 1/2 mile NW and it's really bad, 1/2 mile NE and it's $3 Million homes in East Grand Rapids.
This was cold blooded murder. And here's where it will get dicey, like so many of these tragedies do, the prosecutor is a Right Winger. The city of Grand Rapids is liberal and has a large minority population, but it's in Kent County, and they only elect white conservative prosecutors. I happen to know this prosecutor through mutual friends, he's going to be forced to indict, no doubt about that, but he's not liked or respected in the minority community in Grand Rapids. The DA is Chris Becker, he's not going to be trusted to vigorously prosecute this case. So like other incidents, in other towns, the people won't feel like they're getting the justice the victim deserves because the prosecutor was elected by white people to do the job they see as protecting white people from minorities. And that's what rarely gets written about, the fact that even after something as egregious as this, people of color can't rest easier knowing the courts and prosecutor are going to be even handed. That's what you saw in Ferguson, MO, a prosecutor who half assed his prosecution and then publicly defended the officer he was supposed to be trying to convict.
That's why people just can't take it anymore and get violent. No one pays attention until a city is on fire, no one listens. Rinse and repeat.
