...and tears ran down my face when KBJ was confirmed.
I am so proud to be an American today. Long time coming, but finally...a black female justice on the SCOTUS. I am betting that RBG is smiling!

(17,984 posts)As I listened to that bunch of Ill mannerted, ignorant old white men all I could think of was how many women are listening to those boobs and thinking about November?
There will be riots in the streets if they refuse to let us vote!

(4,079 posts)That man is an embarrassment.
I'm looking forward to proving all of the "pundits" wrong and kicking some serious ass in November.

(1,654 posts)Especially the way that brilliant and accomplished woman was treated by the Republicans - politicians and filthy repub media. Someone else was saying this may be a game changer now that more people see more non-white non-males on the SC we will also be seeing who gets into the pipelines for the elite universities, the elite clerkships and the chances for judgeships.
In this time of so much turmoil and grief it's wonderful to have some joy.

(3,322 posts)I am also, an old white woman, and I am so thrilled and heartened that she was confirmed, as the 1st black female justice on the SCOTUS. It is a day to celebrate.
I agree that it has been way too long in coming. I hope and pray that this historic day, is a trend that keeps on going, and many more people of color, marginalized, and underrepresented communities, become supreme court justices and make the voice of the court reflect the diversity, and the true will of the people.

(3,557 posts)This is truly a monumental moment for our country.
Many people focus on the fact that the new Supreme Court Justice is a black woman but beyond that, our new Justice is incredibly qualified and strikes me as a fantastic human being overall. As a nation, we were able to look beyond her race and gender to select the best person for the job.
This is the America that I believe in and will fight for.

(5,380 posts)is in a particular job of influence.
And KBJ appears to be all of those.
Notice I mentioned neither gender or skin color?
So why are the media making such a big fuss about that?
Focussing on the minor details to stir up certain 'feelings' while avoiding her obvious experience and competence?
I guess she had to be super competent to 'overcome' her gender and color 'shortcomings'?
Thanks media, for showing your true colors! (And they ain't pretty!)
EDIT: She did well in the hearings. No indignant fake faces, no 'I like beer!' rants, like some.

(5,380 posts)Sometimes identifying with a particular group sends an unintentional message.
I avoid posting about my age, gender or ethnicity because I want to avoid unintentionally implying that my way is 'normal' and 'mainstream' and anything else isn't.
It's like saying 'I am a white male, but despite not being like me, I still approve'.
As if NOT being white and male is some sort of handicap.
It's a common thing the media do, unfortunately. We need to be aware of that, and above it.
In the case of the media though, the motivation is quite clear - avoid mentioning KBJ's obvious qualifications for the job, but point out what they consider are her 'shortcomings', ie gender and skin color.
Which kind of makes them racist and anti-female.

(16,903 posts)I doubt she was COMPELLED.... This old white woman agrees with her.

(82,383 posts)Just to show that there are white people who agree, unlike the white right wingers. A mild virtue signalling, that one does not have to be a POC to be happy about this happening. Trying to show there is a change in white racism, a lessening of it - like Jesse Jackson upon the election of Obama, saying the white people have changed. They aren't the white people of the earlier eras who would faint at the idea of POC in these high positions.

As to being white, actually I'm more of a pinkish beige.

(9,888 posts)cares about how Supreme Court justices reason legally. I think we've seen that labels don't determine what legal opinion a person will reach. So congrats all justices for reaching the pinnacle of your profession. Now lets all try to reason like intelligent, educated human beings. Some of you can get stated with that at any time.

(22,031 posts)...and I feel the same as you do, Scottie Mom.
With Trump, McConnell and the rest of the GOP, it's been hard to be proud of our country. President Obama made us proud. President Biden is making us proud. And Associate Justice Jackson will make us proud.
I am betting that Justice Breyer is smiling!

(2,486 posts)but what is this "old" stuff.
I was born in 1948 - consider myself as almost middle aged.
BTW, I was thrilled that we had a fantastic, intelligent, even-tempered and very very competent candidate who will be great addition to SCOTUS.

(1,937 posts)As an older white man I have had the opportunity to meet Rosa Parks and in the future I think that KBJ will be as an historic figure and a glass ceiling breaker.
