(22,218 posts)Long before she made it to the Senate or the House. A real piece of shit.
This is someone whose last name literally got her elected.
"I dunno much about her politics," Tennessee Republicans will tell you, "but I sure do love the sound of her name!"

Blackburn is an ignorant racist who thinks she's a beauty queen.
On edit: Apparently this photo is not from today. But it was on another day when she made that sign. She is who she is.

(61,033 posts)Well, Blackburn, you've aged and put on quite a few lbs, and you we never that special upstairs. Still aren't to be flashing white supremacy signs.
What are you, twelve years old?

(24,876 posts)except her intelligence. She has suffered an unbelievable embarrassment over a fumbled answer a very long time ago.
The fact that she is from South Carolina, blonde and a Christian would probably make her destined to be a right winger.
I could give two shits about what agency she signed with. It's completely irrelevant.
Now she's a Realtor. So what?

I think there are people that DO flash that symbol. But I think we take it too seriously at times and every time it shows up immediately think they are signaling wp.
That isnt to say that she isnt in this instance.

(113,971 posts)That is, of course, what they count on. Our making excuses for their racist dog whistles as something "accidental."
CrackityJones75
(2,403 posts)I said that I wasnt saying that she wasnt flashing the WP symbol.
What I was disagreeing with was the statement that it isnt a natural hand position. Apparently that makes me a racist excuser for some reason.
Yer looking for an argument where there isnt one.
hlthe2b
(113,971 posts)who, beyond her long record of racist positions, her abysmal questioning of our latest Justice to SCOTUS--her attitudes and questions all but telegraphed this behavior. It is a bit like claiming someone using the "n" word actually MEANT to use the old English term for miserly. Not calling out blatant racism, white nationalism, fascism, and the like with their well-documented symbols by contortionist attempts to convey "benefit-of-the-doubt" is not honorable civility IMHO--it is naive' enabling.

(15,463 posts)People have been 'positioning' their hands like this for a long, long time. Much longer than the same being co opted by the WP slugs. If not 'natural' (and I'm not exactly sure what 'natural' is as far as mannerism) - then it is certainly far from unique. Or recent.
And pointing that out does not make one an apologist - for this woman or anyone else. You've been unfairly maligned. We have some purists ... And a few pugilists.

(69,364 posts)Personally, I'm outraged by the racist behavior of Republican senators. Obvious racists are racist. They think they're being cute. I'm not interested in hearing that Marsha Blackburn might have innocently and mistakenly just happened to make a trendy white supremacist hand gesture while she was saying stupid racist things to a Black person who is her superior in intelligence and decency. Sure, maybe it was an innocent accident. But it's far more likely to have been deliberate given the context of Blackburn's well established pattern of behavior.
People just aren't in the mood right now. Too much hand wringing and virtue signaling from Democrats. Time for us to start fighting back. Blackburn is a racist and she made a racist gesture. No excuses.
whathehell
(30,468 posts)similar to the "thumbs up" gesture many use now.
CrackityJones75
(2,403 posts)I have also seen people do it when they are articulating a point for some reason. As if it symbolizes that exactness.
whathehell
(30,468 posts)God knows I've no love for Marsha B., but bigoted as she may be, I don't see "white power" signaling as being her style I could be wrong, but that sort of thing seems to belong more to a tough, young, largely male, crowd.
I'd guess Marsha to be too much the "belle" for such things.

(46,058 posts)WTF is the vile woman doing in our Senate? I doubt it will happen, but I'd love a reporter to ask her to explain that away. Hardly just a simple hand movement.
Caliman73
(11,767 posts)This is the thing we need to always understand. These people we call vile and whom we think are unfit to be in Government, were elected by fellow citizens.
We cannot even blame "gerrymandering" on her election. Senate races are statewide. If we want to see her gone, then we need to offer the electorate something they want more than to just have their racial animus stoked.

(5,969 posts)but this is a stretch.
Further, as the person who tweeted this already acknowledged, this pic wasn't from the confirmation hearing. But connecting this claim of showing the white power sign to the SC confirmation hearing surely got that person the attention they wanted and the misinformation is spread by others.

(92 posts)Moreover, it is almost as evident that she was flashing the sign for the other person, or persons watching. I can't recall, the last time I used the sign having my fingers in that position. When I did I'm pretty sure that I held my hand high showing another person, or one of my pups, things were ok or, you got it right.
I can't remember the last time I was sitting, speaking or not, that I, or the other person were holding their fingers in that position without making a point. Contrary to the comment about it being normal to do so, I believe it very rarely happens.
And being that she and her magat companions spent several days asking some of the most obviously racially charged questions they could muster, leaves one leaning towards concluding she is sending a signal of I've got this covered.
Too fucking bad it didn't work you lying embarrassment to humanity.
