(13,003 posts)that Daddy was every bit as big a whore monger as Donnie, and had visited Russia on "business" so many years ago. That would go a long ways in explaining how Putin came into being.........

(17,757 posts)to wheel into a convenience store. I stopped he was in and out quickly with two six-packs of beer. He asked me to go back the way we came, being quite curious, I complied. What I had missed was a person holding a sign, that said, "I need money for beer." My partner told me that he never trusted giving them money, so he bought the beer.
I will say that the sign holder was quite happy, and retired the corner with his beer.

(41,496 posts)He came to the US (and Canada) to run a whorehouse for the 49-ers. By that I mean the goldminers who flocked to California and up north in Canada when they discovered gold in 1849. Granddad Chump became rich, and moved back to the New York area to invest in real estate. I read that he died young and his son Fred (Chump's dad) took over the real estate business and became partners with his mother. He basically went around Queens and bought up cheap properties, fixed them up and rented them out.
The original source for the money was pimping for the goldminers. Most of those miners ended up losing their shirts anyway. Only a few ever got rich.

(17,165 posts)That unfortunate man appears to be homeless. I am glad he has a sense of humor about it, but it is actually a somewhat tragic image. When I see the images like these, I do not feel as though society has changed all that much from the one described in George Orwell's less known masterpiece, Down and Out in London and Paris, describing the lives lead by so-called tramps in London/Paris in the early 1900s. A very saddening but powerful read.

I wonder what kinds of lives people in such lousy circumstances lead from day to day. No developed country should have people living in such harsh circumstances..
This is from just last week:

America's homeless ranks graying as more retire on streets
A horribly depressing read..in some ways I find developed world poverty even starker sometimes than that in the under-developed countries. It is different but just as grim if not worse.
And one toxic side effect of these conspiracy theories about "actors" (Alex Jones/Sandy Hook) is that it allows people to feel ok about ignoring the plight of people like these. Nobody likes to feel uncomfortable about brutal realities like these..much more convenient to convince oneself that such people are all lazy, addicted etc. or liars/actors etc. We are an unpleasant sort of species in some ways.

(511 posts)I remember when I was working at a day labor place out in Vegas, and I had to walk 10-15 blocks to catch the bus to get back home after working an eight hour shift doing construction clean-up.
So, I get to the bus stop and there's a guy practically standing in the street with a sign that read, "Why lie, need money for beer." He finally got tired and walked over to the bus stop and sat down beside me.
Of course, curiosity got the best of me and I asked him how much he made doing that, and he told me what he got for just 2 hours holding that sign. It was more than I had made working my ass off that entire day.
Vegas may be different, but back home in Missouri, I've seen the same thing. I was homeless for 2 years, I never asked anyone for a single penny. But I did take advantage of the once a day free lunch at the Salvation Army. Those people are lifesavers. The rest of the time, I had a canning route up by the college I used to gather and recycle aluminum cans to make money. It was a hard life, but somehow I survived.
