and they were worn by both male and female at weddings to symbolize virginity at the wedding! First time I've ever seen the MALE virginity to be as important as the female's!!!!

I read the entire article (this one was at Vogue... some gorgeous headdresses; many elaborate, many more that one could wear everyday); nowhere was there mention of any pagan symbolism, which surprised you. Like someone mentioned above, I'd have bet good money it hearkened back to fertility symbolism.

They are hoping that the comeback of these headdresses in all forms, even the smallest forms of dried flowers woven in headbands (like we flowerchildren used to wear back in the 60's) could form the basis of bringing wars to an end... giving peace a chance all across the world. A good goal, if only. I think it'll take more than that. But I've grown cynical thru the years, I'm afraid.

Researchers believe that the Ukrainian wreath is a simplified sign evoking Inanna, the goddess of the peaceful, blue sky, protecting the wearer from misfortune and evil spirits.

...The variety of Ukrainian wreaths is absolutely amazing: magical, traditional, ritualistic – together more than 77 types have been listed.

Flowers-symbols that are traditionally woven into a wreath:

poppy - a flower of dreams, a symbol of fertility, beauty and youth;
cherry and apple blossoms - motherly love and devotion;
chamomile - a symbol of tenderness, loyalty and love;
sunflower - a symbol of devotion and loyalty;
mint - a protection of the child and his health;
cornflowers in a wreath - a symbol of humanity;
rose, mallow and peony - symbols of faith, hope, love;
oregano - a symbol of maternal love;
viburnum - beauty and maiden beauty;
lily - maiden charm, purity, virtue;
ninth power - the root of the nine forces that strengthens and restores health;
immortal - a symbol of health, heals ulcers and wounds;
hops - flexibility and intelligence;
field bell - a symbol of gratitude.
