Supporters of former President Donald Trump who attended a fundraiser for Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said that they hoped the lawmaker would switch parties and challenge President Joe Biden in 2024.
CNBC reported that buzz about a possible party switch was overheard at a fundraiser for Manchin hosted by billionaire Nelson Peltz in Florida. Attendees paid $5,000 a plate to see Manchin speak.
According to the report, "several top executives said they privately hoped the conservative Democrat would switch parties and run against President Joe Biden in the 2024 elections."
"Although Manchin told the group he plans to run for reelection to the Senate as a Democrat, a small group of donors at the event privately said they hope he changes parties and runs for president as a Republican against Biden in 2024 instead," the report said.
Some attendees of the event were said to have "once supported Trump" and look at Manchin "as someone who could successfully run in a Republican primary and then possibly defeat Biden," CNBC noted.

(40,915 posts)Some people worry that Manchin will become a Republican. In the current balance of parties, that will not happen. He would switch parties only if the Democrats have a large majority or the Republicans have a large majority. He is in a maximum position of power right now and he knows it. The Democrats have to kiss his ass to keep him. If he switches parties he will become just-another-Republican.
At present, he is a 'loyal' Democrat.

(14,510 posts)He knows that if he switched parties he would no longer be the cock of the walk, and will certainly be at the bottom of the barrel in the republican party, because his vote wont carry much weight there. And he certainly knows that their presidential talk is just simply to stroke his ego. But oddly enough, deep down, he still is basically a Democrat, even though he grinds his heels into the dirt when the vote isnt beneficial to his pockets.
He likes the chair he sits in right now. I really dont expect him to make a change.

(19,933 posts)Manchin would struggle in a WV Republican primary for his Senate seat if he flipped.
The idea that he would enter the GOP presidential primary is just profoundly dumb, he would have no chance.

It's always been nonsense. He's perfectly happy being a Democrat; he's been quite clear on that note, contrary to the incessant chatter here and elsewhere.
