As you and Mopinko say. A simple fact dropped and left to pick up or not, might occasionally have some beneficial effect. Who knows?

But firm partisans, especially loyal authoritarian personalities, either know what their faction believes is the truth, or really don't care if it is. Facts that contradict their faction's positions reveal their enemies to them, and they double down their resistance and disbelief, and contempt. This reason that trumpists are unreachable by simple, obvious truths is proven by many studies. And to be about as likely to produce a positive result as spitting into a strong wind.

I usually state my position and that it is a moral issue for me. I suspect that surprises these days more than anything (Democrats think they have morals?) but don't know. I don't stay to argue.

Then I tell them that it 'must be true' because they can't prove it isn't.
When they tell me I'm supposed to prove it, I point out that they just told me *I* was supposed to 'disprove' their claim so it's up to them to 'disprove' that they fuck sheep.
Which of course they cannot do.

They rarely put it together. Usually they just get mad and resort to perjoratives.
