(35,300 posts)That's a good thing.
I've only heard people ask why--in the last 10 months, I haven't heard a single person complain that somebody else was wearing a mask. I also haven't heard anybody seriously object when asked to mask up when somebody asked nicely. (The only real objection was, "Sorry, don't have a mask on me." And when offered one, put it on. 10 months.)
Let's not center outliers. The periphery is, well, on the periphery.

1. New cases overnight (9,000)
2. Current active cases (54,000)
3. Overnight deaths (7)
Armed with these figures I can deal with any cretin who wants to know why I'm masking.

i mentioned at a picnic with colleagues the other day (first time meeting them in person) that I'll be wearing a mask for the rest of my life and one woman burst out laughing. (11,767 posts)I've still masking, and still have folks smile and open doors for me. I'm often the only person with a a mask, including staff. I live in bright red Trump southern Oregon. It may be because I frequent the same establishments days after day, for years. I am pretty sure at my local quick market, if some jerk tried to give me a tough time, the folks there would be on him instantly, and it would be his last day walking through their door. Those people are like family to me.
I have had nothing but the usual friendly interactions. Although, I thought I was going to get my ass beat down yesterday. I had backed out of my parking spot, the guy 2 spaces over in a huge truck and dark windows, starts backing out. He just kept coming, I put my car in reverse and started honking, so he knew I was there. His tires were as tall as my front end. He just kept coming, got about a foot from me, before he pulled forward. Then, he stopped and jumped out of his truck very angry, until he saw an old lady in a little red car. He gestured, "I saw you.", I waived and said okay, sorry. I really don't think he saw me, and had I been a male, he probably would have started punching my window. He was really angry when he came towards me. I was scared.
niyad
(113,259 posts)particular twit. Annoying, but not a threat so far. Like you, I tend to go to the same shops and stores, so people tend to know me.

(11,767 posts)Came towards me. I deal with folks daily, who do crazy or aggressive driving during my commute, I never honk or make gestures, out of fear. I only honked at this guy because had he kept coming, and would have backed over my front end, I'm sure. I was thinking this morning, had my windows been darkly tinted like his, he would have probably been pounding on my window, or maybe worse.

(11,767 posts)I am thinking about carrying something. Two young men in a new Camero, pulled up to me and asked if they could take the small dent out of my rear passenger side. I was at the south medford Walmart, parked in a handicap spot. I asked for ID or a business card, they said they were from Dallas Texas, and all that 'stuff' was in Dallas. There were plenty of people around, so I wasn't worried. I asked how much, he said $200 and to follow him. I said I didn't have that kinda cash. They said, okay, momma, have a good day. Seriously, they thought I would follow them somewhere? I watched them, and they exited the parking lot, didnt approach anyone else. I had just gotten off work, finished my bit of shopping, so was a little after 5pm. I texted my sister to let her know of the encounter, in case they followed me, or anything weird happened.
The guys may have been totally legit, and probably were, but it gave me the creeps, you know what Imean? It was just odd. Never had anything like that before, other than a guy at the pharmacy wanted to polish my headlights. He was older and on foot, also liked I still drove a stick shift. Harmless, didn't get a negative vibe.

Of course I wouldn't have. Voluntary mask-wearers are, by and large, more courteous and considerate of others, so we tend to scowl behind our masks at the asshole who's working so hard to help spread the pandemic.
My job brings me into dozens of homes and businesses each week, and nearly every customer tells me that I don't need to wear my mask. I have multiple replies, tailored to my audience:
1. Thanks, but then you'll see that I didn't shave this morning.
2. Thanks, but I'm just a bare skull under this cloth.
3. Thanks, but then you'd turn to stone like all the others.
4. Thanks, but then you'd be able to spot me in a line-up.
5. Thanks, but then there'll be two ugly faces in this conversation.
6. Thanks, but I have to wear it for all of pledge week
7. Thanks, but then you'll probably tell me to take my pants off.
8. Thanks, but I'm not wearing a mask.
9. Thanks, but I can't take it off until I've fulfilled my destiny.
10. Thanks, but can't remove my mask in the presence of others. This is the Way.
Or, to keep it simple, I say "Thanks, but I prefer to keep it on, all things considered."

(8,698 posts)Often they will be embarrassed to have to repeat it. Also, you dont have to take the bait and react to them at all. Being ignored can confuse them. Often its people with personality disorders and anger issues who want to start something. Luckily, I live near a very small town where most people know each other. Its kind of live and let live. You can also throw their questions back at them. A very critical of everyone neighbor confronted me - she told me she thought I didnt like her. I say back - I think its you who dont like me. Then she looked blank and changed the subject.
