I can't believe I did not sense this from this person whom I have known or thought I knew for about 20 years. In conversation he mentioned that he had cancelled his Netflix about two months ago. I asked why, since I enjoy the family plan on Netflix and think their offerings are pretty good. Friend: " just got tired of their bullshit movies and documentaries." Like what, I asked. " Like all those anti-Hitler documentaries and all those "woke" series and movies. My brain went into tizzy right then. I can't even begin to relate the rest of the conversation.
As I think back over some of our conversations and small talk over the years I can now see clearly what I missed and dismissed as freedom of thought and different strokes for different folks. I can't prove it but I have a strong feeling that there is a RW movement that is trying to "cancel" any culture except their RW-alter reality-culture. I think Netflix is being Disney-ed right now. What is happening to Disney in FL is creeping into Netflix and other popular streaming services.
My advice, copy and download what you can. It may not be accessible later. Tell me I am wrong...I hope I am.

(4,417 posts)Frankly, it would be worth it just so I can watch my favorite shows without commercials and watch them at my own convenience. But as a Trek fan, the original programming -- like Picard -- make it a must-have streaming channel.

An aberration brought about by stopping service in Russia because of their invasion of Ukraine.

(1,865 posts)Because it got out of Russia. Russia accounted for 700k subscribers. So, but for Russia Netflix would have had a net gain of 500k subscribers. Netflix has 220+ million total subscribers so the 200k amounts to less than 1/2 of 1% of all subscribers. The loss in value, in my opinion is is a complete over-reaction by the market but thats just me.

(11,160 posts)FED interest rate hikes people are moving to away from growth to value. The corporations are making profit hand over fist but are infatuated with stock buybacks to keep share prices up. Also like fossil fuel companies use any excuse to raise prices simply because they can.
IMO, the stock market is nothing more than a big casino but the alternatives are scarce. I think most people would like to be able to keep up with inflation and not take risk....especially as you get older.

Any corporation that doesn't toe that fascist line, or dares to provide thought-provoking info and truth will be punished.
I don't think I could be friends with someone who considers an anti-Hitler documentary to be "bullshit". He must have either been looking for those "bullshit movies" or was told to do that. I've had netflix for years and have never seen them

horrifying. anyway i think you're right. they tune in carlson and hate radio and other rightwing disinfo factories and it fucks up their brains, fills them with "righteous" hatred, and leaves them entirely intolerant of any other view - they don't even respect other people's lived experiences. Their critical thinking skills are abandoned. I have loved ones who have gone on down the rabbit hole, and we are essentially estranged. it is sad.
it's an abuse of the first amendment and i wish i knew how to remedy it.

(3,379 posts)Netflix is having this current struggle because they lost 700,000 subscribers from Russia. They cracked down on password sharing and raised prices. Many people are returning to work, school, and activities outside the home, which limits the time available for binging shows on Netflix. Those are bigger factors now, rather than any coordinated RW effort to boycott them.

(53,551 posts)one time too many, making them the most expensive streaming service available, even more expensive than HBO Max. After almost fifteen years, I canceled my subscription. $15.49 a month was just too much for just one streaming service and their content did not warrant it. Meanwhile, I subscribe to both BritBox AND Acorn for a combined total of only $12.98 a month and I watch them far more than I ever watched Netflix.
I am not the only one who found the recent rate increase unreasonable and that could account for many of the 200,000 lost subscribers. The last time Netflix raised their rates, they said it was so they could provide more high quality programming, but over a year later, I still did not see any significant improvement, just another rate increase.

(11,114 posts)Netflix has a lot more competition than it used to. People are now making choices. I don't have cable and exclusively use streaming over a chromecast, and I don't have close to all or most of the services. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max are probably the big four. But you have Paramount+, Apple+, AMC+, etc. etc. etc.
How many of those do you want to pay for? And when paying for them, are you actually using them? I recently noticed I hadn't watched anything on Netflix in almost two months. I haven't cancelled it, because there is quite a bit there I've been "meaning" to see, but I bet there are plenty of people who are now seeing these streaming services more like gym memberships they never use. "Well, maybe I'll go later in the week!" I mean, maybe.
Mix in the Russia stuff and the fact that Netflix's quality control has really taken a dive. So much stuff on there is mass-produced garbage content for the sake of having content. Even the tent poles are kind of . . . eh. They could afford to do that when they didn't have competition. Now they do.
The only thing really happening is that they're plateauing a bit due to saturation and competition.

(80 posts)Its $20 a month. Thats doubled in the last few years for me. I cant afford it with everything else going up so much.
IronLionZion
(51,554 posts)they used to be the only streaming service but there are many choices now. And many of the content creators have pulled their stuff back from Netflix onto their own services. So Netflix is great for people who like original content created by Netflix.

(17,910 posts)On the flip side I am finding it a complicated optimization problem by now :-/...
how to sign up for streaming services so I maximize my "must have show" hit rate at minimum cost..sigh..
IronLionZion
(51,554 posts)then sign up for services based on what you want to watch. Then cancel after you're done. You can do some damage with the free trials and discounts for new subscribers.

I have other friends who would do things like only subscribe to HBO when Game of Thrones was running. A buddy of mine just mentioned the other day he'd have to resubscribe to Netflix when Stranger Things lands.

I have a bunch of stuff I found on there that uses the Mubi service. I'm waiting for a free weekend so I can hit that 7 day free trial, lol.
As it is Batman is on HBO now, and I can't even think where I'm going to find three hours for that. In the same boat for Drive My Car. That's been in my queue for ages.

Yeah I don't really have time to watch half the crap that is on my list..I have Amazon streaming (I know..I know.. ) and just finished the first 2 seasons of The Boys...which was pretty good..I want to get the Peacemaker at some point... I think that is HBO...

"[A]nti-Hitler documentaries..."? What in the absolute fuck? I can't even wrap my mind around that. If you're NOT anti-Hitler, anti-Nazi/anti-fascist, that means you ARE a fascist/Nazi, at least by tacit approval of them, if not by implicit approval. Jesus H. Christ...🤦♂️

(3,588 posts)As I have family members who are immunocompromised, and most of the movies I watch end up on Disney+ or Amazon Prime. No need to carry the extra subscriptions.
Somethings got to give. A lot of people start out subscribing to several different services. Prices go up - whatever you watch the least gets cancelled. And if you realize you aren't watching it enough to cover the price of a couple of movies, you cancel.

Plus you will have your cable

I just gave up. Cancelled it all and will stick to buying a movie I want when I want.

As for why its simply that these days I would rather read than watch tv though I do enjoy some current shows such as the new Star Trek: Discovery over on the Paramount streaming service.

(172,285 posts)and started doing the conversions. I went on and finally did mine last month and because of the plan that I got, I also got a free Netflix sub with that plan. When I had Sprint, they had given me a free Hulu sub for the same type of circumstance of it being included in a plan.
So it's possible, depending on what soon-to-be-former Sprint customers do (if they decide to do the move to T-Mobile), there might be a chunk of them who end up with a Netflix sub (if they don't already have it).

(2,194 posts)to implement a new system where they would charge extra for other IP address access. Which basically means if you are on vacation, at work or staying somewhere else, you were going to be charged extra for accessing their app anywhere outside your home. Yes, this might prevent password sharing, but you are going to lose customers doing this, which is apparently what is happening.
PS. This has not been implemented yet, but apparently word is spreading and I think customers are just disgusted with the idea. I heard this about 2 weeks ago.

(1,026 posts)Used to be you could share your password amongst friends and family. I pay for HBO and my son pays Netflix and we share. Neither of us watches much so its not worth it to have a subscription for each of us. Just like renting a video and sharing it with someone before you return it.
Well Netflix will have none of that! Now they are charging a per person fee.
I dont watch it enough to pay my own subscription. It has been nice to have for the once in a while I want to sit and watch a movie or documentary. Not enough to have another monthly bill.

(3,066 posts)My mom (Faux News victim) canceled I guess about a year ago over the Faux news manufactured outrage over the movie "Cuties" which they (and thus she) labeled PORN!!! She and all her friends where OUTRAGED!
I watched a little of it as a result. Couldn't watch it all (not my type of movie), but not because it was in any way PORN!. I think the whole reason Faux targeted it was because it was about a Muslim young girl main character from a Muslim producer (or director?, I don't remember) and was getting all kinds of good international press. But Netflix promoted it with a somewhat racy movie poster and the girls (characters) where young teens. Start of the current pedophile/groomer era I guess.

(8,183 posts)I am not a fan of dark themes with gratuitous violence and psycho nut jobs, or "action" films with countless explosions and chase scenes that go on endlessly. It seemed I had to "work" too hard to find the kind of films I enjoy which have been easier to find and select on Prime. I had been thinking of cancelling Netflix for years, but never did. Then they increased their rates.
Since I mostly watch films on Prime which is free to me, including Hoopla and Kanopy, I decided to cut the cord with Netflix after being a customer for nearly 20 years.
nothing to do with all the "anti-hitler" stuff.
