A tiny but mighty Jack Russell terrier has been saving lives in Ukraine and gaining fans around the world.
Two-year-old Patron works with State Emergency Service rescuers in the northern city of Chernihiv, where he sniffs out Russian bombs (in addition to warming laps, nipping sleeves and generally being a good boy).
In fact, he has helped neutralize nearly 90 explosive devices since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian officials said last month.
"One day, Patron's story will be turned into a film, but for now, he is faithfully performing his professional duties," tweeted Ukraine's Center for Strategic Communications.

(196,454 posts)My dog would be great at that. He somehow sensed a box turtle in our backyard from laying in bed on the second floor. Twice. Middle of the night both times.

(25,725 posts)Actually we had a Teddy Roosevelt terrier which is a small squat short dog for 16 years. She passed away in 2020. In about 3 weeks we will have a Teddy Roosevelt terrier puppy. They are fearless. I understand completely why Ukraine is using one. They're also really good at hiding things and finding things. So finding a bomb is just part of the show.

(4,459 posts)He's 16 now and has lost a lot of his sight and hearing but in his day he was a force to be reckoned with.
I don't think our next dog will be a JRT, we're too old to deal with that.

(20,568 posts)It's great that he can contribute to the cause. Dogs are most happy when they have a task to perform, whether it's sniffing out explosives, or merely bringing love and laughter into our lives.
Good dog!

(20,761 posts)A handsome devil. Possibly even more than Ollie, the muscular chihuahua two doors down.
Seriously, JRTs are good for a lot of things besides running away, jumping, brawling, chewing and disobeying. Good boy Patron.

(12,217 posts)In his day, at least. He just turned 14 the other day, and is doing really well, except for his hearing. In his prime he was hell on wheels to rodents... incredible ratter.
If he could have been kept on task, he would have murdered those agility trials. He was faster than you could believe, and could make sharp turns at full speed.
Great dog.
