The man who wrote the book on Disneys relationship with Florida is warning that removing Disneys special district status could come at an economic cost, not only for the surrounding municipalities that would have to absorb the Reedy Creek Improvement District but for the state as a whole.
Rick Foglesong authored Married to the Mouse: Walt Disney World and Orlando, which chronicles Floridas love affair with Disney.
The book specifically looks into the Reedy Creek Improvement District, an area where Disney can govern itself.

Foglesong said dissolving Reedy Creek would mean all the services the district provides would have to be paid for by either nearby local governments or by the state.

(50,566 posts)Disney pays north of $100 million a year in a special tax to the district that they will no longer have to after the district is dissolved. This is in addition to their property taxes.

(7,403 posts)In Control of infrastructure. Right now if Disney wants to build something, the can pretty much do it within the confines pf the law. They plunk down the cash and make it happen. Roads . Sewer whatever. Didney even provides fire, ems, etc. at the level they want. Now all that goes away greatly increasing the red tape to do any development at Disneyworld. Thats IF this punitive retaliation for exercising free speech is allowed to stand.

At this same time, DeSantis' gerrymandering of the Congressional districts there threatens to unseat Val Demings and other Black elected officials.
