They are called cigar sticks, although some people just use a toothpick

You can buy fancy ones here:

That's where that expression comes from. I'll never smoke a cigar down that far. Not only do you have a whole cigar's worth of tar at the end, but it gets pretty juicy and "bitter".

I love a good cigar as much as anyone, but you'll never find me smoking a "dog end" under any circumstances.

I've got scissors in both cars & one in my golf bag.
When the end gets too wet, I trim it back to improve draw & shed the tars before they build too high.
I'm a fairly high volume cigar smoker, too.
I wish I could find one of those holders like George Burns used to have.

Until I googled cigar and toothpick and found out that, yep, it's a thing.

If it was a cigar he was using to smoke weed, it would just fall out of there, so as Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

I'm not really fond of "our side" making up stuff. People do actually do this with cigars, apparently.

Who knew?

I don't get it. The last bit of a cigar is "the bitter end" and not worth the trouble.

and finished it off down to the last shred.

And yes, I did that in my college days when money was extremely tight. A big bag or a tin of Bugler tobacco and pack of papers had to last a very long time.

Good 'ole days they were! Gasoline was around 25-cents/gallon so that should tell you approx. what year.
