Emmanuel Macron was re-elected President of the French Republic on Sunday. He won the second round of the presidential election with between 58 and 58.2% of the vote against Marine Le Pen (41.8 to 42%), according to estimates published by television.

and most commentators are making this very point. They were explicitly referencing the horror that was Trump and Brexit too. France was not willing to embark in an adventure after seeing the consequences in the US and the UK.

Is it the media? The need for a story? "Stay tuned, we don't know what will happen next!" Tons of articles about if Le Pen wins.

Ok, but it's France. Nearly every election you have a bajillion candidates from the center to the left dividing the vote, so the Right gets someone in with a rather small percentage.

Then the run-off comes, and all those lefties and centrists coalesce around the not crazy right-winger.

It wasn't even a mild possibility Le Pen would win. But people seemed to think so.
