About a year ago, the guy came down with COVID. He's young (late 20s), but still ended up in the hospital.
He didn't need a ventilator, but he was in the hospital for a week or so with it.
Guess what? He just came down with COVID again.
He thought he was protected because he recovered.
Something tells me that we are going to be dealing with this wily virus forever.
And, the people who refuse to get vaccinated are the ones encouraging it to keep us guessing about its next move.

(19,095 posts)Good friend of a friend. Did a fantastic job with my loan. Late 30s, 3 kids and a wife, in great shape. Anti Vaxxer, and a Covid minimizer, "it's just the flu people." Caught Covid, spent 6 weeks on a vent, lost 70 pounds, still struggling with day to day life months after he got out of the hospital. Still spewing anti vaccine nonsense and saying Covid is no big deal.
It's a cult.

(2,367 posts)Here's a website that highlights antivaxxers who are very public with anti vax taunts and threats mostly via Facebook, directed to science and we who believe in science. Many are politicians and/or church leaders. Oops. They all get Covid. Read their families Facebook after Covid strikes. And then.... read the comments below. Manny comments are very funny and most are very harsh.

(33,357 posts)it's like the flu. you get a vaccine every year to mitigate it's effects, not to make yourself 100% immune.
that said, fuck this guy. he's a walking variant vector.

It's lose-lose.

(26,609 posts)They protect against particular strains which are different every year. When it's the same or a similar strain the immunity is longer term.
It's theorized that the reason older people were less affected by the Spanish Flu was due to another pandemic by a similar strain decades earlier.

(17,454 posts)and then no boosters because they "got sicker than a dog" after the second shot, then recently got Covid, and said "the shot was worse".
Refuses to get any of the boosters.
I tried explaining to them that they would have most likely been a lot sicker when they got Covid, had it not been for the first two shots, and that they would be doing themselves and everyone around them a favor if they got the boosters.
I also explained that I got "sick" as well with all 4 shots, but that they were not really sick, it was just the immune system building up defenses.
The response? "yeah, I think I read that somewhere".
Fuck these people. They're babies. They're whiners. They have no legitimate reason not to get vaxxed and boosted. They only think of themselves.
Fuck 'em. Sideways.
Fucking idiots.

(1,788 posts)If they think the mRNA Covid vax makes them feel sick, they've got another thing coming when they get Shingrix. You'll never hear the end of it when your friend gets either shot #1 or #2. It's unpredictable as to which shot will have the worst effect, but nearly everyone complains about one of them. I'm not complaining myself, since shingles can be incredibly painful and sometimes can even lead to a hospital stay.
It's a great thing that we have these vaccines, even with the side effects. I guess we're going to have to go back to the days of the killer childhood (and even adulthood) diseases to get people to wise up.

(9,894 posts)I've had four COVID vaxes, sore arm only. The second Shingrix? Not fun. The first was nothing.

(23,296 posts)I got shingles. I didn't know the vax could be bad. I took the pneumonia vax and was sick as a dog for 4 days.
LuckyCharms
(17,454 posts)I think nearly everyone feels like death after the shingles vax.
The person I am talking about is not getting the shingles vax either. OK, fine, don't get the vax, and when you do get a horrible case of shingles, make everyone around you fucking wait on you hand and foot because you're in so much pain, and tax the already overburdened health care system even further.
All this stuff is a hot button for me. Grown adults being afraid of not feeling well for a little while after getting a shot. Everyone whines about everything.
My wife and I felt so sick after our shingles vax that we were actually laughing about how ridiculously bad we felt.
But, I'd do it again if it was necessary.
We are like minded. I am a big believer in vaccines. I got the worse flu of my life after getting the flu vaccine a few years ago, but that didn't deter me from continuing to get a flu shot.

(1,788 posts)...but it wasn't that much fun. A lot of chills, fever, no appetite, even some respiratory stuff (my doctor warned me some of the side effects mimic Covid). It was nothing that some Tylenol and an early bedtime didn't cure. But it was a lot worse than any of the Covid shots I had. Still I would recommend it to everyone because shingles can really be awful and can have severe complications that will land you in a hospital.

(1,292 posts)I also only had a sore arm after the first shingles vaccine, also.

(27,818 posts)I didn't and I have been suffering from Shingles for almost two years. It's awful. They were on my face. If affected everything in my life. And it still hurts, especially when I am tired or stressed.

(4,937 posts)for me. Nothing seems to affect me much though. Mostly just a sore shoulder for a few days. 1st COVID shot was the worst but not bad really. Lots of tiredness and very very mild flu symptoms along with the sore shoulder. I count myself VERY luck in that regard.

(7,420 posts)Same for the first three Pfizer COVID-19 shots. I mix matched with a Moderna for the most recent booster and it made me feel like a cold was coming on the day after. Cleared up after that.

(9,992 posts)because I got shingles and he had to listen to me. After he got the second Covid shot he said it was worse than the Shingrix, so I guess it's all relative. But we've both had chickenpox, so there's that.

(16,205 posts)Having had shingles, Id get the vaccine again if it was appropriate.

(13,536 posts)get Moderna? I have had four Pfizer shots and didnt get sick once. The first booster, I was a little tired but didnt have that with second booster. You dont have to get the same shot when it comes to boosters.

(9,992 posts)and the booster and didn't get sick at all. I was cold the evening I had the second shot but not like chills, just cold. Went to bed early and woke up feeling fine. No side effects from either of the others. But then, I rarely get any side effects from anything. I got side effects from a flu shot once, and I get those every single year. Had to, being a nurse, and just never stopped.

(32,723 posts)so they're not antivax. I think most medical professionals recommend that we listen to our bodies after any type of medical procedure or drug. Doubling down and ignoring a bad reaction can lead to death.

(17,454 posts)horrendous nightly battles for TWO MONTHS before this person decided to even get the first vax. Screaming and crying fights for 2 months, every night.
So yes, this person is anti-vax, without coming out and admitting it.
And this person is a bar hopper who could care less who they spread their germs to.
Friend of mine.
Not going to be a friend for long though.
Sick of biting my tongue. This person is going to feel my wrath in a big way any day now. and when I let my feelings be known, I will lose a friend, but get this huge weight off my chest.
I can feel it coming. I'm so pissed off that I'm going to lose my shit on this person more than I ever have in my life. It's not just the vax issue, it's the sudden selfishness.

(21,780 posts)According to him.
So, no vaccines, no boosters for him or his family.
I gave up trying to reason with this fellow a long time ago.
He also says kids don't get Covid, even though his kids all had Covid and, in fact, brought it home with them.

(2,537 posts)for Novavax to be approved. She goes to a "groovy doc" who approves (so she says). The breaking point for me was when she got very sick a few months ago and her "groovy doc" advised her to be tested for Covid, and that if it was positive that she would have at least a small amount of immunity. Somehow it was too inconvenient for her to go.
This a very intelligent person!
Apparently there are a few holes in the common sense department.

(2,541 posts)I dont think COVID is going to go away as well and the people who are unvaccinated, whos bodies somehow managed to fight off a previous infection or two are giving the virus all the opportunity it needs to incubate and mutate into something their body wont be able to fight off the next time.

(32,703 posts)We need to protect ourselves and our loved ones. We need to act responsibly about this virus. Getting vaccinated (and boosted) was the first big step but we'll be dealing with this for the rest of our lives. The new variants are going to require more and bigger boosters, or something ... I don't know what.
When friends and co-workers (and family members) refuse to take this virus seriously, and when they act like it's a "hoax," well they're just wearing blinders. But you aren't wearing blinders my friend, and neither am I.
