(96,161 posts)We can finally expect that peace is probable. One thing many are not mentioning about our current POTUS is that he is quietly appointing women to numerous high positions within our government. That is a good sign and shows that he gets women's rights better than most men in office.
I'm hoping that soon we will see the majority of nations lead by women.

(1,891 posts)... since I live in Denmark with a social democratic female PM, and are not happy about it. The norm for Denmark is multi party governments, with ministers from all the supporting parties. She has only chosen ministers from her own party, and the the pool to pick from there has not really been convincing.
Her party is showing some strong totalitarian tendencies with lots of public security cameras and wire taps of ordinary people, and the actual slogan: "More surveillance gives more freedom". It has been deemed illegal by the European Union, but she persists. Generally our social democrats are doing a better job when they are in opposition...
Her government has made some really stupid military adventures, the last one being supposedly fighting pirates at Africa, but with no coalition partners or rules of engagement in place. The legality after killing some pirates down there raised a lot of questions.
We are very used to having lots of women in our governments, but seeing this as some kind of revolutionary change is far from reality. There are a lot of power seeking women, who are no better than men for this kind of job. But OK, incompetent women getting the same jobs as incompetent men is also a kind of progress!

But it's generally not from an excess of testosterone.
expect women to be better, or worse, than men running countries. I'm not even convinced they'd be that different.
Women bringing peace to the world? I seriously doubt it.

(8,272 posts)But I would not want to be betting our democracy on her, or any woman's, chances.
Yes, Hillary was correct in everything she said, and we should listening. But perhaps the most important thing we can learn from her is th strength and persistence of misogyny in the United States.

(2,967 posts)Oh, hell yeah. This world will be a better more peaceful place if smart, strong, competent women are running things.
RobinA
(10,283 posts)why people think this. I expect that all things being equal there will be just as many smart, strong, competent women running things as there are smart, strong, competent men running things. We have certainly seen recently that a female is not automatically any more competent at government than a man.
llmart
(16,344 posts)I didn't make the assertion that all women would be better than men. I wouldn't want the likes of Sarah Palin or MTG or Boebert etc. in those positions, which is why I said "smart, strong and competent".
Women tend to be less aggressive, more collaborative, less hostile and less likely to have the outsized egos.
CrackityJones75
(2,403 posts)Why would it be better than to have smart competent qualified men? I am not really arguing for one or the other, just that we should have smart competent qualified people on government but I will add that our government should be representative of its population. Therefor, to your point, I believe, our government would be better to have more competent qualified women in it.
soldierant
(8,272 posts)if you look at a strong, competent woman and a strong cmpetent man, the odds are very, very high that the strong competent woman will have worked much harder and faced untold belittling and discrimination just to get those credentials. That is not a guarantee of empathy , but it is somewhat more likely to lead to empathy than is a male career path.
No, it's definitely not a guarantee. And no, it shouldn't be assumed. But we have seen it happen often enough that we tend to assume it.
CrackityJones75
(2,403 posts)Chances are sure. I just think that our government should be reflective of its people. Without 50% women in it it fails on that front.
niyad

(2,403 posts)I am basically agreeing with you.
I am not just going to say that two fictional people without defining their backstories are this or that. But what I do know is that women need to be represented in our government at the very least on par with their portion of the population.
Yes women have been put through the absolute shit since the beginning of time. That is the baseline understanding of the world as it relates to women in its history. That part is not lost on me.

(39,301 posts)Recently I read that one woman is a token, two are allies, & three are a coalition. It may have been in Michael Moore's movie, "Where to Invade Next?" when he talks to the women leaders of Iceland. One of them said she would never want to live in the US because we don't take care of each other, of our communities.
Nevada state legislature has majority women.
Women outnumber men in the Nevada legislature. What difference does it make?
Nevada has the only legislature with more women than men in both chambers. Some academics are studying what that representation means.

Pat Spearman has no doubt that women make a big difference at the Nevada legislature.
The Democratic state senator pointed to a 2019 debate over a bill that would allow people to access a years worth of birth control instead of a 30-day supply, something advocates say helps people avoid unintended pregnancy.
Spearman said she was surprised when male legislators in the room suggested that people with that much birth control would sell the medication.
Why would they sell them if they need them? Spearman said she asked. Every woman on the committee, and that was in the hearing room, you watched their heads nod. They knew exactly what we were talking about.

For sure Cuellar would be seen as hard right in the Nordics, and most Rethugs would be seen as outright Nazi fascists and ultra state wreckers, and many would be prosecuted for hate crimes and speech.
The Norse Conservative Party is very much like our (Swedish) Moderates, who changed the party name from the Conservatives to the Moderates several decades back, and in 2006, to De Nya Moderaterna (The New Moderates) to reflect further leftward moves (the Norse Conservative Party has made many if the same ideological changes over the years)
A lot of DUers would be Moderates if they lived Sweden, and Conservatives if they lived in Norway. Of that I have little doubt, in fact, almost none.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative_Party_(Norway)
The Conservative Party (Bokmål: Høyre, Nynorsk: Høgre, lit.?'Right', H; Northern Sami: Olgebellodat) is a liberal-conservative political party in Norway. It is the major party of the Norwegian centre-right, and was the leading party in government as part of the Solberg cabinet from 2013 to 2021. The current party leader is former Prime Minister Erna Solberg. The party is a member of the International Democrat Union and an associate member of the European People's Party.

Slogan
"Vi tror på Norge"
(We believe in Norway)
The party is traditionally a pragmatic and moderately conservative party strongly associated with the traditional elites within the civil service and Norwegian business life. During the 20th century the party has advocated economic liberalism, tax cuts, individual rights, support of monarchism, the Church of Norway and the Armed Forces, anti-communism, pro-Europeanism and support of the Nordic model; over time the party's values have become more socially liberal in areas such as gender equality, LGBT rights and immigration and integration issues, and the party is relatively secular despite its nominal support for the Church of Norway; the party defines itself as a party pursuing a "conservative progressive policy based on Christian cultural values, constitutional government and democracy". In line with its Western alignment the party strongly supports NATO, which Norway co-founded, and has consistently been the most outspokenly pro-European Union party in Norway, supporting Norwegian membership during both the 1972 and 1994 referendums.
The Conservative Party traditionally caters to the educated elite; it has the most highly educated voters of all parties, and is the most popular party among elite groups. In the postwar era, the party formed a grand consensus with the Labour Party regarding foreign and security policyfrequently expressed by the maxim "the foreign policy is settled" (utenrikspolitikken ligger fast)that led Norway to co-found NATO and enter into a close alliance with the United States, and the parties' economic policies have gradually become more similar.
Both parties are pragmatic, relatively technocratic, anti-populist and close to the political centre. The party supports the Nordic model, but also a certain amount of semi-privatisation through state-funded private services.

(10,806 posts)Are much more than just pretty. We need brilliant women with character. I use to vote any woman in local elections that were running in positions that were not party affiliated. But then came a national onslaught of Palins, Blackburns, Collins, The End of Days Jehovah Princess and more recently, MTG, Bang Bang Barbie, Nikki Haley, Tulsi, a number of governors, and GQP think Ivanka would be a good choice for President. Lets not forget Macrons Putin Barbie challenger. We NEED smart, honest women that are not just pretty. I am 100 percent in favor of women leadership, even as president, but we must be more aware of their stance and purpose than many were with Tulsi. Not so sure we want a particular Arizona female Dem senator as President. Lots of wolves in female clothing out there. Our choice must be fearless and be able to fight with the fury of a scorned women. Imagine the attacks on Kamala if she won the Presidential race.
Our Amazing Female candidates are out there, just real democratic ones that are vetted and bad ass tough. Pretty sure Sarah Huckster Sanders just being female doesnt make her leader material.

(10,806 posts)Whoever the first female President is, she will have to pull in lots of center and center right voters.
Thats how we shut up the far right nut bags, with a huge proportion of American people much louder and unified against the totally stupid caucus of far right. But louder than Fox and News Max. They will brutally attack a female as they did to Justice Brown Jackson. It will take a real Wonder Women to fight that, with ALL of us having her 6. Just my opinion. This freedom caucus criminality and Taliban wet dream needs to be silenced. I cant wait until a strong brilliant female does take the wheel of leadership here.

Mainly because they better understand the problems the world and their populations are facing. I bet every single one of the leaders here pictured are deeply invested in issues like economic justice and climate change.

That is a broad-brush, prejudiced, presumptive point of view based on people's ages and a theory about how age impacts their views, judgments, or abilities.
