Classic line I found in my files about Texas conservatives.

"Millions of Texans are convinced that their primary enemies are other Americans, and that the American experience in this age and generation has been a total failure, their own prosperity notwithstanding." - Theodore White, writing in The Reporter, “Texas: Land of Wealth and Fear,” 08 June 1954.

1954. (Emphasis mine.)

It's like I even knew some of those people, though they were mostly gone by my time in Texas.

I lived in Dallas during the Molly Ivins' years. Her wit and wisdom were unmatched.
And when she teamed with Anne Richards... let's just say they were a force of nature!
Missing both Molly and Anne still today. Two of the best things to EVER come out of Texas!

The 50s and 60s were completely unprecedented in human history.

I didn't mean "everyone." I meant the country in general. In 1950, 70% of the telephones worldwide in private homes belonged to Americans, and 90% of the world's privately-owned automobiles.

Most Texans bitching about their lot in life were WAY wide of the mark. I was just referencing how well the country was faring generally. I meant no offence.

that they should be their own country. The rest of the country just isn't quite good enough for them. I lived there for a short time many years ago and it truly was like a different country in many ways.
