they are not united, their reasons and motivations are almost the polar opposite

Although Ocasio-Cortez said oligarchs should be sanctioned, she argued that the reallocation of funds would be done without due process and set a "risky" precedent for future presidents.

"Oligarchs should suffer huge financial losses, which is why the congresswoman participated in designing and voted for the toughest sanctions in recent memory," an Ocasio-Cortez spokesperson told Newsweek. "But this vote asked President Biden to violate the Fourth Amendment, seize private property and determine where it would go—all without due process."

The spokesperson added, "This sets a risky new precedent in the event of future presidents who may seek to abuse that expansion of power, especially with so many of our communities already fighting civil asset forfeiture."

seizures of criminal assets. I understand her reasoning of a future administration but if it came to that you'd probably be at the civil war stage in the US.

I am not willing to start trashing the Bill of Rights with a poorly crafted bill that could really come back to bite us in the arse.

That is a pretty good explanation in my book. We want to punish criminals but we need to do it by the rules, not on the whim of one person, even a good person. There may not always be a good person in teh White House as we have seen over the last 4 years. Imagine the power to seize assets and reallocate them given to a Trump.

From the link:

Although Ocasio-Cortez said oligarchs should be sanctioned, she argued that the reallocation of funds would be done without due process and set a "risky" precedent for future presidents.

"Oligarchs should suffer huge financial losses, which is why the congresswoman participated in designing and voted for the toughest sanctions in recent memory," an Ocasio-Cortez spokesperson told Newsweek. Once again I'm in agreement with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. We have already seen the fiasco that is the asset forfeit program that takes assets from supposed/sometimes not even convicted drug dealers and such and gives the money to Law enforcement to buy military equipment to subject the underclasses to repression....all without any due process....relying on the lack of resources to keep those without to even keep what they have. There is plenty of time to address Ukraine's needs without rushing the disposal of these assets which may or may not have anything to do with Putin's power. Better to follow procedures that will result in a lawful taking.
