A nation's leader taking over the army from his generals worked REALLY well for the last guy who invaded Ukraine.

One of the many mistakes supposedly learned from our time in Vietnam was that LBJ got too involved in day to day battle plans. It's hard to stay objective when one's personal ego is involved. My understanding is that when you become the top general, you stop MAKING battle plans. You review plans, approve them, critique them, reject them, and maybe even make a suggestion or two. But your new role is mostly deciding what area needs supplies and equipment, and where to move units. You set objectives and then you let your subordinates achieve them.

The best thing for Ukraine right now would be Putin taking charge.
