There is something about it not being a war that allows russian soldiers to do this.

(99,710 posts)Putin's invasion of Ukraine is the greatest strategic blunder of the 21st century. Unfortunately, it replaces my nation for that dubious honor in its invasion of Iraq. We had Saddam in a box with the sanctions regime and no fly zones.

(17,229 posts)of the war, he'd screw that up and retreat faster than he did Jan 6th.
And then claim he'd won, and Putler would be happy.

(33,327 posts)It's pretty smart not to advance if you're going to be killed doing it.

(32,762 posts)Russians to advance ever so slowly each day, drawing them out and taking heavy losses. Their plan being to get them far enough out and trap them without resupply. They are playing this war so so smart. This isnt to say the Ukrainians arent taking losses as well they are.

(66,328 posts)The Russians stumbled badly during the initial stages of the Nazi invasion in 1941, but by the time Stalingrad rolled around in 1942, the Russians were doing much better in training and equipping their soldiers.
In fact, they used a little ingenuity in manufacturing enough weapons for their huge numbers of fighting men. Armorers found a cache of thousands of obsolete Czarist-era long-barreled bolt-action rifles somewhere. They simply sawed the barrels in half and used them to make immense numbers of submachine guns for the front-line troops.
