Political WireFrustrated army chiefs are urging the Russian president to drop the term special operation used for the invasion and instead declare war, which would enable mass mobilization of Russians.

(33,207 posts)Excluding the dirty nukes the Russians already unleashed on themselves at Chernobyl.
Sounds more like posturing.

(19,974 posts)That's exactly what it sounds like, though having to declare it as a war will bring its own downside in making the Russian people more aware of what's going on, and many will remember Afghanistan.

(32,773 posts)This seems like a terrible time to launch a war. Besides that, NATO won't like it one bit.

(6,110 posts)And German energy company agreed to accept arrangement with Russia to pay for gas in Rubles.
I think Russia being rich in energy sources has the upper hand.
Russia has the gas Europe needs and the pipeline is in place to supply it.
Europe gets cold in winter and hot in summer and need energy to stay comfortable.

(67,112 posts)world does not sit by and watch. I'm not saying I know the solutions, and I realize that much is being done ... but the time might come when more assistance is needed. If Putin were to take Ukraine, he will not stop. There will eventually be an all out war. Horrible to say, but that's the potential I see in the cards.

(13,110 posts)Just because he called it a 'special military operation' doesn't make it so.
When he invaded Ukraine that was a declaration of war.
Ukraine should be allowed to defend itself in any manner to rid their country of the invaders.

(6,216 posts)I think we're going to see a lot more push back from NATO.
Russia has already shown it doesn't have what it takes to wage a land war. Too many of their weapons are in poor condition, and their army is sadly under trained.
Also they have shown how weak their supply chain is.
This is a last ditch attempt by Putin to rescue his army from an embarrassing defeat.
I wonder if he plans to release all those people he had imprisoned for calling it a war. I'm betting not.
I don't like to say it this way, but NATO has a vested interest in prolonging this war. Russia is been bled dry due to sanctions, the cost of the war, and the rate at which they are burning through equipment and manpower.
It's certainly not a wise decision for Russia to go all in on this fight. But then Putin is pushing to build a legacy before he dies, and the clock is winding down.
Unfortunately his legacy is not going to be what he would like.
