U.N. confirms evacuation of civilians underway from Ukraine's Mariupol

KYIV, May 1 (Reuters) - The United Nations is conducting a "safe passage operation" for civilians from the Azovstal steel works in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, a spokesperson for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Sunday.

1. Confirmed by President Zelenskyy:

Evacuation of civilians from Azovstal began. The 1st group of about 100 people is already heading to the controlled area. Tomorrow we’ll meet them in Zaporizhzhia. Grateful to our team! Now they, together with #UN, are working on the evacuation of other civilians from the plant.

It’s my understanding - unfortunately - that the UN can only bring out civilians, whereas the Ukrainian military is responsible for bringing out their people…how this can be accomplished, I do not know — hoping hard for a good outcome ———
