Woman claims she was 'following her GPS' down staircase, police think she was drunk

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - A 26-year-old woman who drove her SUV through a police pedestrian plaza and down a flight of stairs claimed she was “following her GPS instructions,” according to the Portland Police Department.

Officers didn’t buy the woman’s claim stating they “felt it was her excessive blood alcohol level” that led to the unusual crash.

Police said the woman, who appeared to be in a Toyota Highlander SUV, drove through the police department garage, across a pedestrian plaza, and down the stairs.

“We are fortunate that she didn’t strike anyone and this ended with just a small amount of property damage,” the Portland Police Department said in a Facebook post. “Please don’t drink and drive.”

The woman was issued a summons for operating while under the influence.

I seem to recall someone who followed the guidance from Apple's GPS app right into a lake a few years back. Or perhaps that's one of those apocryphal internet stories that makes the rounds every so often.

In any case, this lady's best bet might well be a plea deal. And to lay off the hooch.

Michael drives the car into a lake while listening to the GPS directions. Dwight tells him not to listen to the GPS, but in they go.

One for the record books. She's lucky no one was hurt including herself! I would have loved to see and hear the reaction of the cops when she blamed her GPS.

Another debacle for those clinging to: Don't trust your lying eyes.

a guard rail and no road. About 200 yards ahead on the left was my destination. That looked like a parking garage where a GPS doesn't work anyway.

thru. most of the time, I see barriers (cement planters or some type of cement item) blocking pedestrian pathways by car parking

And the news agency filing this story -- WJHL -- is a Tennessee media outlet.

I had to search the web, but it turns out she was in Portland, Maine. Does no one take journalism classes anymore?

Not Florida.

“One driver crashed into the police station garage before being charged with operating under the influence. Another motorist drove onto train tracks.

No one was hurt in either incident, Portland Police Lt. Robert Doherty said.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, a blue Toyota Highlander drove into the Portland Police Department's garage, then drove across the pedestrian plaza and down the stairs.

The vehicle didn't get far down the stairs.”

We put the address of the campground in our Gp and half an hour later the voice told us to turn right and we will have reached our destination. We both cracked up with laughter as we read the sign in the drive… Pine Hills Cemetery.
