(2,921 posts)No, seriously, we are all New Yorkers tonight.
Talked to my BIL in Brooklyn - he's inland, and safe from the flood zone.

(19,841 posts)this is a big challenge... I know these areas that are flooding--this is bad bad.
And then NJ, PA, MD, CT--haven't really even heard much. Won't until morning, most likely.

(3,769 posts)The Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees were locked in an epic battle to be World Series Champions. I happened to luck into tickets to games six an seven at the ballpark formally known as Bob.
It was barely six weeks after 9/11. Everyone in the country was on edge. (with no help from the Bushies who were ginning it up).
The first two games were played in Phoenix and I watched on TV as the Diamondbacks went up 2-0 on the Yankees.
Then I realized, I was going to at least one World Series game in Phoenix less than two months after 9/11. I was suitably "terrified" of being in a stadium with 50K+ people, an obvious target. I was actually considering giving up my once in a lifetime chance to go to a World Series game, maybe two. I had three young children at home.
Then I saw them on TV, the New Yorkers, the hated Yankee fans. THEY WEREN'T AFRAID! The hated Yankee fans were inspiring. You can't love and hate them at the same time.
In fact, my new found respect for the Yankee fans inspired me not to give up my game six tickets next to the D'back bull pen (all the better to jump over the wall and kick Byung-Hyun Kim's ass in the event he started warming up), or my game seven seat to see Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens and Mariano Rivera all pitch in the same game. Game seven. Of the World Series. Really.
Those of us old enough to remember know how it ended and I won't bring it up now because really, it doesn't matter anymore. What matters is New York, and New Yorkers found my heart in those ten days in 2001, even more so than after the attack. They weren't afraid. New Yorkers aren't afraid of anything. New York can overcome anything.
New York will overcome whatever Sandy has to throw her way. We all know that now. We've known for eleven years.
Its one of the oldest cliches' in the book, but I LOVE NEW YORK. I always will, and my heart breaks for her tonight, but she'll be fine in the end. She always is. Always will be. I LOVE NEW YORK.
(and the really scary part is.....I was born in Boston)

My heart goes out to them all.
