Tesla will pay travel costs for its employees seeking an abortion out of state if their current state doesnt provide the service.
Let the continued Elon bashing continue.

(15,377 posts)As soon as a state Tesla operates in criminalizes aiding and abetting an abortion, and they will do that, Tesla and other corporations will stop doing anything that could jeopardize their business.

I do think the freedom and equality of millions of other Americans needs protection.

(18,828 posts)Its much cheaper and easier for him to cover that then pay maternity leave. Considering he is in the process of moving his factory from California to Texas I can see why that would be a large concern for him. If I had teenage children, daughters especially, theres not a snowballs chance in hell Id take them to the hell hole Texas is well on its way to being. If hed given it a moments thought hed realize most of his employees arent going to be on-board for that.

(80 posts)To stop that massive influx of people moving from California here because they hate California. Democrats. My neighbors. Are driving our property values through the roof. Not all of us are so left that we want the government to control our entire lives. Ive yet to meet a Californian who regrets leaving ..

(18,828 posts)It would be hard for you to meet one whos still in California because theyd rather be there.

(80 posts)California has been shedding population the last 2 years they are are leaving the state. Texas is top 2 where they are coming. They are moving here to Texas .on my street across from my house and and a few doors down in each direction. It will hopefully change our voting demographics, but they dont want another California.
Phoenix61
(18,828 posts)What do they mean? Ive heard traffic is insane and housing is very expensive.

(80 posts)You have no idea comparing the two. Google people moving from California to Texas California population decrease. Where are people moving from California. why are Californias moving to Texas . Good lord.

(18,828 posts)people who are living their now say. You said they were your neighbors and they have told you they dont want another California. Google said companies were leaving because Texas has lower taxes and lots of people follow their job.

(80 posts)Top moved to states.
People leave for companies but also the same reasons as companies. High taxes, high crime, high taxes, gridlock, homelessness
.we can shut our eyes to this

(58,283 posts)This bit of largesse obviously helps his bottom line. It costs a lot more to pay for an employee's child birth than her abortion.
When I read that headline, I thought it meant he set up an abortion travel fund for all women in the US, particularly poor ones who really need it. It you're working at Tesla in Texas, you can probably afford a plane ticket to California. Of course, if he hadn't moved his factory to Texas, his employees would still be in California.
Igirl
(80 posts)Hes doing this for his employees. One of only a few large companies announcing this action. Good for him. Your expectation is for him to fund the entire US😆.
Are you as an individual sponsoring anyone? Is gates sponsoring the world? Is Bezos or Buffet? Continue the bashing of musk.
SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)They help poor women. Musk could donate a few million (pocket change for him) to Planned Parenthood if he really wanted to help poor women. Rich women are not affected by anti-abortion laws.
And I fully support the changes for good that musk is bringing to this world. Hes actually doing things and his investments, and company are changing the world for the better.

I can't stand him. That said.....
This fight is going to make for some strange allies. And it will be on this issue (abortion), along with gay marriage & weed. I suppose you can toss the anti-war movement into that mix as well.
Buckle up folks. This is going to be quite the coalition we see formed from all walks of life, the likes of which has never been seen before!

(64,368 posts)Musk. I am not convinced he's a Libertarian for everyone else.
That said, I'm glad he's offering to help those employees. I wonder if Tesla will get sued under Texas law for helping a woman get an abortion.

(12,651 posts)Basically, the gist of my post was that it was hilarious watching conservatives cheer on Elon Musk as if he's their conservative savior (regarding Twitter) because I've never thought of Elon Musk as a right-wing conservative superhero, just as he's not anyone's liberal superhero. Elon Musk is for no one else but Elon Musk. Elon Musk is a libertarian because Elon Musk doesn't want to be restricted or regulated in any capacity by the government.
I think your statement "Musk is a libertarian for Musk" is the perfect summation of Elon Musk.

(33,424 posts)Has anyone been sued?
Ilsa
(64,368 posts)Lawsuits are filed against a Texas doctor who said he performed an abortion.
The suits, brought by men in Arkansas and Illinois, appear to be the first under a state law that bans most abortions after the six-week mark.
former9thward
(33,424 posts)Suits by a self described nut and no apparent action on them in 8 months. Does not sound serious to me.

(8,887 posts)The employee has to go to their boss? HR? Both? And ask for time off and money to get an abortion.
Will employees actually do this?
This seems like a grand gesture that wouldnt necessarily be feasible.
And Tesla is now in TX. Suing Tesla for that sweet $10k bounty would be a no brainer for pro-life zealots
In It to Win It
(12,651 posts)If anybody is thinking Tesla is going to be an easy $10K, it's gonna be the hardest $10k they've ever worked for in their lives.

(33,424 posts)Someone describing themselves as a "disgraced and disbarred lawyer". If this is a serious problem I would think in a state the size of Texas there would have been more suits in a 9 month period. And we would have seen some court rulings.
Arazi
(8,887 posts)There may be more. I have no idea.
You asked. I answered.
Will there be more nutsos empowered by this latest ruling? I believe so.
Now maybe answer my question on how employees realistically tell their boss and/or HR they want time off and money for an out-of-state abortion? Will Tesla pay the clinic directly? Will they give money directly to the employee? How do they verify pregnancy? Will they require notification of their employees periods? Tesla only approved pregnancy tests?
What if the purported father of the zygote decides they should accompany the termination? Do they have rights to get time off? If not, why not?
I really want to know how this works in the real world. Ive never been fortunate enough to work at a company that would pay for an out-of-state abortion thats illegal in my own state.
