(7,604 posts)that life begins at conception. It declares that a fetus is POTENTIAL human life that only begins when God infuses a fetus with a soul. The CC can only estimate when that moment occurs. Aquinas believed in the notion that a soul is infused when the fetus becomes viable, or capable of independent functioning. The evangelicals inundated the Christian world with the revisionist notion that human life begins at conception. Some sects of the CC have also adopted that view.

(1,386 posts)When does the soul enter the body? Even the Jesuits can't agree on this one. They also don't know when this elusive "soul" leaves the body. Thus they capriciously make rules based on fuzzy thinking.

Ex-Catholic here.
What you cite is one more glaring inconsistency with how Catholics use the catechism to advance whatever narrative they have. It was thought at one time that such babies went directly to Limbo. Now, the verbiage is they are commended to Gods mercy, since they were not baptized (the automatic ticket to the Pearly Gates). There are some rites that can be said, but no funeral Mass.
I cannot begin to tell you how cruel that is to a grieving parent. I know I was one. But I think most priests dont believe that bullshit either. Mine didnt.
Compare this with how some Catholics view the death penalty. Its pretty clear in the CCC that it should only be used in the most extreme of circumstances, and that given all the ways to protect society, it should be rarely, IF EVER, used. Thus, the context is clear that the Church does not support it. Yet, you hear some say its permissible, totally ignoring that context.
To be consistent, Catholics should follow the seamless garment argument that all life is precious and should be protected and honored from cradle to grave, if they are such good Catholics as they claim to be.
Left all this behind several years ago and never looked back. I was a convert, so I never fully bought most of that faith in the first place anyway.

(28,678 posts)The CC doesn't baptize stillborn children because they believe that baptism is for the living...
... and they absolutely allow a funeral mass for stillborn.

(19,499 posts)the state of Illinois would not issue a death certificate or birth certificate. She was listed as "products of conception" on my medical records. *ETA: At 42 weeks of pregnancy.
Since then, I understand that the state does issue some form of certificate for a stillbirth or an intrapartum death.
But, if a fertilized egg is a person, there are a lot more people who should be getting child tax credits annually, based on the number of miscarriages!
I knew that rethugs could not be reasoned with and they would not stop after the Sandy Hook Massacre. They were satisfied with school shootings then (remember that their 2A rights trump anyone else's dead kid) and they don't give a damn about them now.
Now watch the murderous collaborating snowflakes whine about the insult. Let them cry.

As Carlin said, once you leave the delivery room, youre on your own, kid.
Everybody sees through this shit, including those who are pushing it.
