Erdoğan says Turkey will not approve Finnish and Swedish membership of Nato

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has said he will not approve Finland and Sweden joining Nato.

Reuters is reporting he has said Swedish and Finnish delegations should not bother coming to Turkey to convince Turkey to approve their Nato bids.

Finland and Sweden, while both Nato partners, have long viewed membership as an unnecessary provocation of Russia, their powerful eastern neighbor. Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, however, has led to a radical rethink of their security policies.

Membership of Nato would require ratification by all existing members.

Erdoğan is a putin puppet just like tRump

NATO should not trust them and I dare say they don't.

I'd rather have Finland and Sweden than Erdogan and his ilk.

They have closed the Straits of Bosphorus to all naval vessels.

https://news.usni.org/2022/02/28/turkey-closes-bosphorus-dardanelles-straits-to-warships

That has probably disadvantaged Russia; even under non-war rules, countries that don't have a Black Sea coastline are limited in the number of ships they can move there, so Russia would have potentially been able to move more through.

They are not a Democracy.
They have been purchasing Russian anti-aircraft systems and they have advanced US fighters.
They attacked forces supported by the US in Syria.
They have Erdogan and his security team attacked protesters while in the US.

Since Erdogan took over, the whole country has changed it is literally a Russian money pit these days. Erdogan and Putin are best buddies. The whole southern coast and majority of seaside resorts are Russian enclaves. The flights have not stopped from Russia to Turkey at all. Antalya is literally a Russian city these days.

They are not a reliable real ally and NATO knows it.

NATO do not trust them one bit.

Turkey joined NATO is 1952, they were enthusiastically pro west back then and very relaxed but a lot has happened since then but when Erdogan took over the situation changed dramatically, the relationship became very strained and difficult due to Erdogan's loyalties.

Turkey wants our gear (F16s eg). Turkey doesn’t want to trade access to our military technology for tighter relations with the corpse of the USSR. Erdogan is saying he doesn’t want to hear from Sweden and Finland. I imagine he’ll pick up the phone when we call. I’d wager talks will continue.

In a news conference on Monday, Erdogan repeated that Turkey would not approve their bids to join NATO, calling Sweden a "hatchery" for terrorist organisations, and adding it had terrorists in its parliament.

"Neither of these countries have a clear, open attitude towards terrorist organisation," Erdogan said. "How can we trust them?"
