Wyoming gop senator booed for sex identity remarks at graduation

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis apologized Monday after getting booed and heckled for remarks she made on sexual identity during a University of Wyoming graduation speech.

A first-term Republican from deep-red Wyoming, Lummis said in Saturday's speech in Laramie that human rights are derived from God but that government seeks to redefine many of them.

"Even fundamental, scientific truths such as the existence of two sexes, male and female, are subject to challenge these days," Lummis said.

She paused and smiled while many in the crowd responded with boos and heckling.

“And I challenge those of you,” she continued. But she didn't complete that thought, saying: “I'm not making a comment on the fact that there are people who transition between sexes.”

Lummis is a former congresswoman, state treasurer and University of Wyoming graduate who's been prominent in Wyoming politics for decades. Until now, at least, she has been less outspoken than many Republicans who've made a major issue of gender and sex identity.

She was from the rich part of town and that she wasn’t popular or unpopular kinda like she was before this story.

She rarely generates publicity positive or negative. It is Wyoming so it should be easy for a Republican to win there but my mom never expected her to be a Senator.

where men band together and give up some right for the protection of all to form a civilized society.

So she's just making it up as she goes along to fit her religion.

All you have to do is congratulate them on their years of hard work, string together a few inspirational quotes, and wish them a successful future.

said that Sen. Lummis and those like her are the reason that newly minted high school and college grads are fleeing the state, and I can't wait to get out of here ASAP. She has no intention of treating my friends or me with any sort of respect.

"the existence of two sexes, male and female, are subject to challenge these days,"

If anything, they are demanding two sexes exist.
They just get hung up on where and with whom people of appropriate age place their guzintas and guzoutovs.

Yeah, I know what she meant, but none of that was necessary. That whole thing was a political speech. I would have walked out.

Odin?

Christianity is not the only religion in America, and never has been.

I have never heard of this person previously. She represents fewer people than live in my city.

According to the article, it was one of those "I'm sorry you were offended" non-apologies:

“I share the fundamental belief that women and men are equal, but also acknowledge that there are biological differences and circumstances in which these differences need to be recognized. That being said, it was never my intention to make anyone feel unwelcomed or disrespected, and for that I apologize,” Lummis said.

Not sure why that kind of politics made it into a commencement speech.

you know everything that follows will be not worth hearing.

If that's your religious belief, then that's YOUR religious belief.

The rest of us don't want your religious beliefs interfering with our lives.

You know how there are good touches and bad touches?

Think of your religious beliefs as a bad touch.

Keep it to yourself.

Ummm yes you were. I am fucking tired of people saying they didn’t say what they just fucking said. The gaslighting needs to stop. If you were wrong just say “I was wrong”.

Quite possibly the worst commencement speech ever

...
Good for the students booing her. She seems to think that Jesus created “rights”, that they weren’t the product of human beings writing rules down. She thinks “two sexes” is a scientific truth, when the science she excludes and doesn’t understand says that sex is much more complicated and diverse than she imagines.

If you just listen to that short segment, though you’ll miss the other lunacies in her speech. A minute or two before that, she was plugging Bitcoin. After her “two sexes” bit, she talks about her favorite contemporary non-fiction author, who is…Eric Metaxas? Well, there’s the problem right there. She thinks a conservative evangelical pundit who writes children’s books supporting Donald Trump, with titles like Donald Builds the Wall and Donald Drains the Swamp, who writes bad biographies praising Christian leaders, whose writing is full of nothing but god-talk, who is an anti-vaxxer, is an example of a non-fiction author.

Lummis is a deluded, ignorant fool. Wyoming is a conservative state, so I can understand how she got elected, but I used to expect a university to promote just the best and brightest, and the University of Wyoming failed on that point.

Also, as of February of this year, Lummis owns about $200,000 worth of Bitcoin. I don’t know what that’s worth now (I hope much less), but using a commencement speech to shill for your personal profit is kind of gross.
