https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/17/opinion/republican-voters-senate.html?referringSource=articleShareIn the latest Times Opinion focus group, 10 Republican voters in swing states wished for an America before 8 percent inflation, before high gas prices, before the Ukraine war. Wished for a leader they saw as strong, commanding, feared. Wished for a party that, in the words of one, put America first again.
They wished, in other words, for a return of President Donald Trump.
But heres the twist: When asked if they felt it was extremely important to vote for someone this year who embraces Mr. Trumps agenda, eight of the 10 Republicans raised their hands. A few seconds later, when asked if it was extremely important to vote for someone who has the same style and personality as Mr. Trump, no one raised a hand.
Throughout the 90-minute discussion with these Republicans, from Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania three states with big primaries for Senate and governor this month Mr. Trumps record looked only better to them in hindsight, especially without the distraction of his mean tweets or personal manner. One Georgia Republican who didnt vote for Mr. Trump in 2020 even said hed consider supporting the former president if he ran again in 2024. I dont like what Im seeing, as far as the direction that the country is headed, this Republican said.

So they want a strong man LIKE trump but not one unhinged and tweeting all day. IOW they want a fascist dictator.

(4,489 posts)They want that huge all-powerful DADDY they vaguely remember from early childhood. There is that silly children's book one of them recently wrote, describing a mythical future in which Trump is a King. If they had really read all of the Bible, they would have read how the prophet Samuel warned the people of Israel that a king would make their lives miserable. At the time, they had a sort of fledgeling democracy with a group of chosen "Judges" to decide how to govern. They wanted a King like the tribes around them, with fancy dress and fancy parades and fancy aristocracy to admire. "Give us a King!" they demanded. Samuel warned them, but they kept clamoring for a King. In prayer, Samuel received this message from God: "In demanding a King, they have rejected Me." And the books of the Kings document how right Samuel was., how many problems those Kings created.

Do they believe that they are the only people in the world? Do they enjoy stupid little podunk diners that much?
I'm so fucking tired of being told what Republicans want and everyone else being ignored.

(38,264 posts)remember how fucked up everything was? Remember how wonderful it was to have all those people die from COVID? Remember how good it felt to get ripped off by the trump family? And we weren't embarrassed in the slightest!

(16,314 posts)being fed a steady stream of b.s. by the media trying to educate us on the orange imbecile's followers and what they want. I don't give a rat's ass about what the Magats are, want, believe, etc. etc.
Apparently the NY Times can't find just regular, normal people, aka Democrats, to talk to.
