Gov. Ron DeSantis has been on a spending spree for months, taking credit for millions of dollars in federal stimulus money hes handing out to mostly rural Republican counties while at the same time bashing President Bidens big government spending.

I think its hypocritical, said Ben Wilcox, research director for Tallahassee-based government watchdog group Integrity Florida. Hes taking credit for something thats not really his to claim credit for.
One political strategist said its part of a plan to shore up DeSantis base and win bigger this time compared with his razor-thin 33,000-vote victory in the 2018 governors race, thus boosting his profile for a possible run for the presidency in 2024.

DeSantis has repeatedly called the federal stimulus money Washington at its worst and blames it for the nations high inflation rate.
Were proud we didnt do like Washington and spent money like a drunken sailor when all of a sudden you end up with all these problems, he said at a recent event in Trenton where he doled out federally funded grants.
DeSantis never mentions the largesse he is sharing comes from Washington. Instead, he attributes the money to Floridas strong economy as he hands out oversized checks at campaign-style events, calling himself DeSantis Claus on at least one occasion.

Borderline campaign events
The appearances, almost always in DeSantis-friendly territory, are borderline campaign events, Wilcox said.
He often spends the first 15 or 20 minutes delivering a stump speech sharing his views on inflation, gas prices, the culture wars, COVID lock downs, Elon Musks proposed acquisition of Twitter and China. Those topics seem geared more toward a national audience than a local one, Stipanovich said.
Despite being billed as press conferences, he seldom takes questions from reporters who attend.

I read this yesterday but before I read it, I was thinking about this as it relates to the Disney debacle.
If the state is taking over the Disney district rather than absorbing it in the surrounding counties, the state is also taking on the debt. That means the Disney debt will be paid for by THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. The country will pay Disney debt all because I have a giant crybaby for a governor.
The country is funding all of this asshole's re-election grandstanding.

(8,236 posts)of the counties won't have to worry about the debt because the state will take over the district (not the counties) and that he has the biggest surplus ever. He implies that if it came to it, the debt will be the state's problem and that it will be paid for with the state's "biggest surplus." The reason he has the "biggest surplus" ever is because COVID stimulus from the federal government, the Biden administration. He will be using federal government dollars - the money from the people of the United States - to pay the Disney debt. (*in my dramatic voice*)
I don't know if the debt will ultimately be absorbed by the state, but he definitely put it out there that Floridians won't have to worry because he has the biggest surplus.
