Mon, May 23, 2022, 12:48 PM
Veteran US statesman Henry Kissinger has urged the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian forces in Ukraine, warning that it would have disastrous consequences for the long term stability of Europe.
The former US secretary of state and architect of the Cold War rapprochement between the US and China told a gathering in Davos that it would be fatal for the West to get swept up in the mood of the moment and forget the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power.
Dr Kissinger said the war must not be allowed to drag on for much longer, and came close to calling on the West to bully Ukraine into accepting negotiations on terms that fall very far short of its current war aims.
Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself, he said.

(64,324 posts)Status quo ante is OK I guess, if you set 2014 as the line, not Feb 2022. I certainly don't blame Ukraine for wanting that.
His "realpolitik" sounds a bit like appeasement.

Now Kissinger wants Ukraine to take it easy on them?

How did that work out? I'm sick of Nixon and Kissinger being praised for this like it was some great achievement. This has done nothing to liberalize China. In fact, China continues to export its authoritarianism.
Movies made in the US are modified to fit the demands of the Chinese regime. An American gaming company punished American players for criticizing the Chinese government. Chinese influence spreads through the developing world. America has lost massive amounts of manufacturing capability as companies moved operations to China.
So Kissinger can STFU. If Russia didn't want to suffer a humiliating defeat in Ukraine, they shouldn't have started a war in Ukraine.

MR. HABIB: It looks like the Indonesians have begun the attack on Timor Portuguese Timor. It would seem to me clear that the Indonesian troops crossing the border would attack the pro-Indonesian forces in the area and have not done very well since the beginning of this thing. And this is quite something. Theres an earlier case where the Indonesians are being forced to move to hold on to what they obviously are going to hold on to that is, they are not going to let Timor become independent, sitting on the end of the Indian Archipelago.
I think what we are doing is like Jack keeping our mouth shut about the thing.
SECRETARY KISSINGER: Is that conceivable?
MR. HABIB: Weve been doing it, so I think its quite conceivable.

MR. HABIB: Yes. The moral lesson is that we have the guns to go in. (Laughter.)

SECRETARY KISSINGER: Im assuming youre going to really keep your mouth shut on this subject.
MR. HABIB: On what?

(13,283 posts)Example, while extreme, is by no means unique: https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/the-west-not-russia-is-responsible-for-the-war-danger-in-ukraine/
In the case of Ukraine, as is most often the case with such NATO militarism, the operation is disguised as one intended to spread democracy. So in the case of Ukraine, the idea spread far and wide in the Western corporate media and from the governments involved over the last few years has been that Ukraine was not being separated from Russia by a fascist coup backed by the West but rather by an Orange Revolution in which democracy was the aim.
In retrospect, it is mind-boggling how closely this approaches Russia's official propaganda. The article is worth the read in its entirety.

(2,369 posts)Russias propaganda machine has been adopting idiots from the far right and the far left, to showcase on RT and through various botnets. The right and the left sides of their operations have been run a little differently, to appeal to the various targets. Nazis like short words, big pictures, and mean content. The deluded fringe of the far left like things that sound erudite and facially reasonable, even though 5 minutes of analysis would show that its garbage. Why do you think RT hired Ed Schultz, and has been showcasing relics like Ralph Nader?
Beastly Boy
(13,283 posts)The far left has been used by various other players as well, Iran and Cuba included.
What makes me curious is how close Kissinger's rationalizations come to those of the far left.

(13,283 posts)Nor did I tie the extreme left to him. I am reasonably certain there is no collusion between the two.
I merely tied both the extreme left and Kissinger to advocating, in fairly similar terms, in favor of Russia's territorial ambitions in its aggression against Ukraine.
And as far as I am aware, no sensible moderate shares this view with Kissinger, or the extreme left.

(2,369 posts)Kissingers skill and relevance disappeared decades ago. Even then, he was a rethuglican imperialist. At age 99, out of politics since well into the last century, his opinions count for less than the paper theyre written on.
But sure, since nobody is listening to Useful Russian Tool Naders exact same arguments online, time for Russias propaganda machine to trot out another relic yearning for one more 15-minutes-of-relevance.

(10,777 posts)Too bad we can't dig up Mr. Chamberlain and ask him what he thinks.
Caliman73
(11,767 posts)Chamberlain while wrong, was a man of good faith. He was popular in England and his strategy now, disparagingly called "appeasement" was actually what people wanted. No one wanted another "Great War". We know that we cannot "appease" aggressors now, but Chamberlain thought he was doing what he had to in order to avoid another world war.
Kissinger is a rabid imperialist, who has never been correct about anything. He favored covert and coercive strategies, using allies then casting them away like garbage; and all for the benefit of the wealthy.
The reality is that we know Putin wants to be remembered in the same vein as "Peter the Great" and "Catherine the Great". He wants nothing less than to re-establish the Russian Empire. We cannot allow that.
