My niece is just starting a new job. She is mentally handicapped and she has done a super job all her life. But she has RA now and had to leave her job of 25 years because it is too physically challenging.
So she has a new job as a receptionist. She is totally overwhelmed after day 1.
We could use some vibes! She is in Spokane. We would appreciate any good thoughts you could send her way.

(15,772 posts)I was dropped into a busy law practice as a receptionist with no training. I lasted one day. Thoughts for her. It's terrible to feel overwhelmed at work

(10,438 posts)With temp work every job was like a first day on the job. I tried Valium too. But doing several yoga breathing and balance exercises before leaving my apartment, and then again once home again, made for much more peace of mind. Truly made a difference.

(20,026 posts)The reason she got this job was because 2 applicants didn't show. And the 3rd one wasn't vaccinated. So she was it. And she's good with computers .

(11,780 posts)It made me think of a woman who worked in my office for years. Very competent and smart but no formal education so she worked as a receptionist. She often did other peoples work for them who were incompetent. She had a bad back and fiber myalgia. I know it was hard on her physically. She got an early retirement (govt job with previous army service). I talk to her once in awhile. She barely gets by financially but is always so greatful not to have to go into work every day. Hope it goes well for your niece.

(114,666 posts)because I'd stiffen up at desk jobs and it was pure agony. Don't be too surprised if she quits this job and looks for something with a lot more activity. There has to be something out there she can do with lower physical demands than her last job, but enough to keep her moving well.
Also reassure her that she's shifting mental gears at this job and that's tough for all of us, but if she wants to stick to it, she will learn the job and get used to the phones and the other activity. Or she might not be able to handle the sensory overload and run screaming within the first week, that's happened to me a couple of times.
RA isn't the nasty thing it was 60 years ago, there are new and much better treatments, especially for younger people.

Congratulations to your niece🙂.
Best advice I can give is to take things 1 day or sometimes even just 1 moment at a time.
Everyday is a new fresh clean slate to start over on. Do the best you can on what you can control and do not worry about what you cannot control and if you can have some fun while doing this even better!
