That no matter how many school shootings you have, it wont change anything?

(4,983 posts)Literally nothing will come of this. And the next one will happen maybe an hour from now, maybe within a week but it will happen and nothing will be done about it.

(40,672 posts)Okay, that sounds about right to me.
I'm glad I live in a place where I'd get some support from the police.
On the other hand I'm never quick to call the police for anything because they tend to be a little reckless with their own guns. I've seen them shoot people I wouldn't have shot. Not criminal, just reckless.
My great grandmas were hard ass property owning women of the Wild West. They had zero tolerance for fools with guns. One or two of them were the sort who could call upon the sheriff-coroner to clean up the mess and fill out the proper paperwork when bad men crossed them.
I don't want to live in that world either.

I know an ardent hunter and likely gun supporter.
I believe if there were a nut in my neighborhood of a previous life that this hunter would support confiscation after a neighborhood chat.
I personally dont know any gun nuts, tho they may have changed since I left.
A distant relative by marriage was killed by her husband in a murder suicide in Green Bay about 18 years ago.

Gun control has become an identity issue. Not a public health or criminal law issue.

(2,502 posts)As it stands right now, even if we had the votes for sweeping gun control(and I doubt we would even get 50 votes in the Senate for anything), it would still have to get past 6 conservative votes on SCOTUS.

(37,341 posts)No matter how big a majority are in favor of stronger gun laws, not enough will vote for the people who will pass them.
And any moderate who suggests we pass some will lose in a swing district when the gun loonies are riled up.

(11,767 posts)We will likely get little action at the Federal level unless we have solid (I mean filibuster proof) majority in the Senate. At the state level, we have to get rid of a bunch of Governors and state legislators to.
It is going to be a heavy lift.
Alternately and still a heavy lift, we need policies to address the factors that contribute to violence in general, which would likely cut into the gun violence situation.
Social programs for jobs, mental health and social services, housing, and addressing the messaging that violence is a viable solution to problems.
Like I said, a heavy lift. Possible but very very difficult.
