The pre-amble explains why...
"..in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty..."
and the Constitution explains how...
"The Congress shall have Power To...To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;"
And guarantees it - thanks greatly to the Militias...
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

(38,310 posts)Our Constitution is full of bullshit, some of which has been overwritten ( how about that 3/5 person rule? ) but a lot of bullshit still remains, especially the over-representation of ass-backwards rural states that the Republican Party has hoodwinked, even as it pisses upon them.
The white people who wrote the second amendment rightfully feared slave rebellions, as happened a few years later in Haiti.
Guns and voting were for white male property owners, including those who kept slaves as property. Everyone else was excluded.

Of course we LOVE large standing armies now.

History is a messy business. It's possible the world wouldn't be much different now (and possibly just as grim) if the Revolution had been lost.
But maybe we'd have stricter gun control laws and universal health care...
Well that's it. When the Fascists kick in the doors and round up all the dissidents, I'll be on their list.
