(43,850 posts)Abbott was going on in a presser about mental health and thoughts and prayers and Beto leapt up from the audience and let him have it, with people yelling at one another on all sides. Beto was escorted out.
Much will be said.

(4,575 posts)of it first. The media actually followed him outside to see what he had to say. He expressed what most are feeling in a very human way and the compromised lot of flesh on that stage couldn't even deal. Not one of them offered one solution. Not one.
The mayor of Uvalde who called him a son of a bitch should have stayed sitting because in his little town of 16,000 this kid had been throwing red flags for quite some time but no one did a damn thing. He broadcast his intentions on social media and the shooter was in the school for 40 minutes. He should be examining what went wrong. I'm betting he does not seek another term.
Beto's actions today was one of the most energizing actions I have seen from a Democrat in a long time.

(6,699 posts)Nothing is going to make a difference until you ban assault guns. Nothing is going to make a difference until you ban large-capacity magazines. Stop being naive and stupid.
Background checks would be nice but they may not do much. Red flag laws might be nice but they don't do much. Banning assault weapons would make one hell of a difference. Stop dancing around the edges. Getting into background checks would make it look like they are actually willing to do something.... when in fact they are willing to do absolutely nothing.
Ban assault weapons in total. Call for it demand it and don't settle for less. The other stuff is simply Band-Aids and probably wouldn't stop any mass shootings.

(16,404 posts)It's not my intention to relitigate the democratic primaries but after Beto made this his issue after the El Passo Walmart shooting some even on this site thought it was a Hail Mary to save his campaign but it wasn't. I knew he was sincere and speaking from the heart. He's the real deal.

(329 posts)Texas politicians went on and on about the need for mental health facilities. They pointed out that in rural areas like Uvalde mental health facilities are few or non-existent. None of them addressed how the situation might have been improved had they accepted expanded Medicaid offered by the Affordable Care Act. Likewise, they touted the expansion of broadband and, subsequently, tele-health accommodations--without mentioning that this was brought to them by the Biden administration. What two-faced hypocrites!!!

Cruz, Corn-one and Abbott created this political theater. Every one of them paid by NRA and came out immediately defending guns instead of mutilated baby bodies they are responsible for.

(6,830 posts)the professional idiots have been self-righteously preaching has been over since it began, and that O'Rourke is waste of our time, effort and money to invest in. "Send it to someone who can win" they evangelize.
Today's events are one (of many) reasons I rarely allow credibility to the for-profit political prophets whose humorless and narrow margins preclude the necessary minimum of common sense (Studs Terkel excluded).
