to those of us on his campaign list:
Uvalde, Texas
I called Amy as soon as I heard the news. She was in the pickup line at our daughters middle school. All these kids look so happy, she said. They have no idea.
What is most damning is that our kids, like many across Texas, seem to expect it now. Their hearts ache, but they didnt necessarily seem surprised when Amy told them. They were 7, 9, and 11 when kids were killed at Santa Fe high school. 8, 11, and 12 when their fellow El Pasoans were killed at Walmart. This is their reality and this is their future, unless we do something about it.
Our broken hearts are with Uvalde. We are with this community, the families who have had their loved ones taken from them, the parents who are still waiting to hear whether their child made it out of school alive, all those who remain in the hospital.
Our thanks is with the first responders, the medical providers, the community members who continue to do everything they can to save lives and be there for one another.
But our thoughts and our thanks are not enough. These massacres are not natural disasters, acts of God, or random. They are totally predictable, direct consequences of the choices made by Greg Abbott and the majority of those in the Texas legislature.
The moment to stop Uvalde was right after Sandy Hook. After Santa Fe High. After El Paso. But instead, Abbott ignored the pleas of law enforcement and turned his back on our communities by making it easier to carry loaded guns in public. The moment to stop the next slaughter is right now.
There will be more Uvaldes, El Pasos, Sutherland Springs, and Santa Fes until we decide to put the lives of our kids ahead of the political careers of gun lobby politicians like Greg Abbott.
He holds the highest office in the state. He has had seven years to save lives but has chosen to make matters worse by rejecting universal background checks, by opposing red flag laws, by signing permitless carry, and by doing nothing to protect our communities from gun violence.
The only way to change this is by winning political power so that we can protect the lives of those in our lives. We win in Texas and it becomes possible to stop this bloodshed. If we fail in this election, then the slaughter of children in Uvalde becomes our future.

(8,218 posts)Eff all of them, the goddam spineless Republican politicians who value campaign donations above human lives. May they rot in Hell...or whatever their worst nightmares are. I hope Orcs pick the meat off their bones. I hope spiders crawl from their eye sockets. I hope worms turn their guts into sauerkraut. Whatever it fucking takes.

And now his attempt to court gun lovers has given them all they need to discredit him. Or, rather, to exploit his discrediting himself.
Sorry to say it, but Beto is finished.

(16,270 posts)Beto has been tailoring his speeches depending on where he is. Maybe it doesn't meet the purity tests but he's a politician looking for support in disparate groups. Cut him some slack!
When pressed, ORourke reversed his earlier reversal, saying, I do not believe that any civilian should have an AR-15 or AK-47, adding that If I can find consensus in the Texas legislature to buy back [those guns], I will do it. https://thetexan.news/on-statewide-tour-beto-orourke-contradicts-previous-campaign-positions/

(5,061 posts)I just checked the RCP average and they have him 47 to 40 against the incumbent.
Is he doing this well BECAUSE of his equivocation?
Might be worth a campaign contribution despite my profound disappointment in him.

It may or may not be something you know, but the word 'equivocate' implies (by its very definition) a conscious and dishonest attempt to deceive.
As is often said, "the more you know, the less you'll be profoundly disappointed"

(6,830 posts)Are you asserting O'Rourke is dishonest (as implied by your use of 'equivocate' to describe him)?

(5,061 posts)This is a measure of character.
I admired Beto's former courage.
But then, apparently, he was advised that being correct and outspoken is not the way to get elected in Texas.
Would a John Fetterman or a Bernie Sanders ever be caught in such a trick bag?

As part of the human condition, minds, policies and sentiments always change-- whether through conviction or through duplicity.
Why that change occurs should be the concern.

(13,480 posts)And as a person who lives in Texas, I will accept the imperfect over the immoral Republican Abbott who lies with impunity (the electric grid is fixed), denies healthcare to millions, and gleefully turned Texas women into second-class citizens with no rights to their own reproductive health care. The maternal death rate in Texas and the child poverty rates are some of the highest in the country thanks to Abbott. And again thanks to Abbott with his deals to relocate business here where they pay few or no taxes for decades while we homeowners pick up the bills for new roads, new schools, and new infrastructure.
No thanks. Ill take Beto over corrupt Abbott any day.

Your statement is an insult. You really should know who Beto is & how this Texas long game is played. Especially when this one lone Democrat is facing down a global supported criminal mob.

(12,248 posts)Pro gun for everyone folks, always trot out the 18 to be in armed services, but have to be 21 to buy a beer. I think 21 across the board. 21 to buy guns. Gives these guys a few years separated from high school hell. 21 To be in armed forces, 21 to buy booze. 18 years old is not really adult, soft spot on our heads isn't even fully done. 21, for gun purchase, 21 for military, 21 for booze, make it simple.
