There goes that ridiculous decade old argument.

But those "kids" and their supporters got action.
Abbott would have them all arrested.

(15,692 posts)Federal law forbids guns on school grounds except law enforcement. Texas mostly follows this in schools.

(2,501 posts)Don't understand. Are you saying that police were hesitant to carry their guns onto school property because of the 'no gun zone'?

(19,186 posts)at other parts of the school (where the shooter wasn't) to get children out of windows.
At that point the shooter had barricaded himself in the single classroom.

(19,186 posts)The border patrol tactical team had shot and killed him at that point.
In other words, after it was all over the cops went in and got their own children.
The bravery!!

(18,969 posts)Did a representative for the police really say that? My god, that man should be fired. Bragging about "keeping him contained to 1 classroom" that was filled with 4th graders is just about the most sick thing I've ever heard.
harumph
(1,893 posts)IOW, the shooter could have entered other classrooms and killed those students as well.
I don't think many on this board realize how fast the gunman could have killed those kids.
He could have killed all the kids in the fourth grade classroom in under 1 minute. We don't know
the time table yet and still, many DUer's are blaming the police for not acting quickly enough.
How many minutes transpired until the kids were dead? Two minutes after he entered? 10 min?
We don't have the facts yet.

(2,501 posts)One poster this morning showed an article where a teacher used a key to let LEO in to the room.
wnylib
(21,340 posts)match what one 9 year old survivor from inside the room said in an interview. That student said that, after his teacher locked the door, Ramos shot through the lock and came inside. How could Ramos lock a door with a shot up lock?
I will try to find that interview.
wnylib
(21,340 posts)Apparently the door that Ramos shot his way through was a connecting door between two classrooms.
So the door to the hallway could still have been locked when police arrived.
Johnny2X2X
(18,969 posts)For all the police knew, there were 200 kids crammed in that classroom that were all alive. The police knew he was in a classroom with little kids and decided to wait for someone else to show up to handle it. There were in fact children who made it out of that classroom alive.

(4,131 posts)Since Columbine it has been standard procedure to train cops to rush an active shooter and not wait for a tactical team. But theyre not obligated to rush in and, many are surprised to learn, cops have no obligation to protect the public according to our courts.
These officers may (or may not) have violated their department policies and training if the training was in keeping with modern standards.
Ultimately cops are not going to protect us. We have to protect ourselves.

(883 posts)Is a very regimented, especially after 911. TV shows and movies showing maverick moves of character scripted scenes is not real life. The killing was already completed before any thought of what is happening and what to do. The guns used were created to be effective. It was created for military action and should only be in the hands of the military. The situation would need to be handled by SWAT team. While yes while the police are to protect and to serve. The pay of $23 an hour or about 47,000/ year is not incentive to die. The good guy with a gun that the republicans like to spout about would have to have luck and military training. The only way would have to have a military trained team with M16 out and patrolling. A regular issue weapon is absolutely no match. So arming a teacher would be useless and actually more dangerous. The schools all would need to be made to bullet proof glass and walls. The best solution is to ban the weapons. Other countries have done it after the first incident and have had success. Anger and coulda, woulda and shoulda is always after. All that needs to be directed at change and not finding scapegoats. Beto did the right thing. Other politicians need to find a backbone and draw a line and hold to it. Dont let the republicans have the narrative.
