(79,201 posts)that is distinct from their doing an investigation. The federal law enforcement can assist the police who have jurisdiction, both on site and, if needed, in the investigation. But they are not the lead in crimes that are state offenses, rather than federal.

If no clear federal laws are involved, I don't believe they can even "help" if they're not invited.

(28,713 posts)The DOJ has authority/jurisdiction over federal law enforcement. Not state/local matters.
That's why many were talking about "crossed state lines" in the Rittenhouse case. It could have led to federal charges.
