president of American University in Beirut at the time, was shot to death in 1984, when Steve was an 18-year-old college student.

I suspect that because both men have come face-to-face with the mortality of someone they loved dearly, they are particularly capable of sympathizing with the pain of those who lose loved ones in these shootings. No wonder their grief over these shootings is so clear and so moving.
