1. does the militia being for the 'defense of the state'

mean for the defense of the individual states, Virginia, New York, etc., OR for defense of "THE STATE as in the United States? I've always wondered which it is.

There was no national army as such, just state militias.

also meant to be a resource if/when the country was in need of defense against an outside enemy.

2. AR-15 is a registered trademark. The patent for it expired years ago.

Many companies make guns similar to but not exactly the same as the AR-15.
