from communion
Doncha Love It???
Not only did Cordileone, a right-wing activist who has refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19, ban Speaker Pelosi from taking communion, he did so extremely publicly. Cordileone went as far as to post his letter to Pelosi on Twitter, calling her stance on abortion a most serious scandal, and a grave evil. He then appeared on EWTN, a Catholic news cable network to defend his decision, and even posted that interview on social media. Seven days after his very public rebuke of Pelosi, he again chastised her on Twitter, writing that she "has strong opinions on what the Church teaches but she is wrong. And that is part of why I had to act."
Pope Francis has made clear no one should be banned from communion, certainly not for political reasons.

(36 posts)The elevation of Bishop McElroy of San Diego to Cardinal was probably in the works prior to the Pelosi/Cordileone situation, because these things take time, but it clearly signals Francis' mindset. The fact that Cordileone shot his mouth off just prior to this announcement is simply a sweet icing to the wonderful cake.
This is a surprising, even shocking, appointment for those who follow these things. Delightful news for the more progressives among Catholics, and one more reason to consign Francis to the ranks of heretic for the rad trads. Bishop McElroy was so far off the radar screen as to be virtually invisible in the Cardinal sweepstakes. McElroy is a Bishop, outranked by many Archbishops and powerful USCCB leaders and AB's of major dioceses who were thought of to be on the "Cardinal" track. He is a progressive who does not believe in politicizing the sacraments. He is a pastoral shepherd who is concerned for issues of poverty, inclusion, and justice. He is the only American named in this round, so it is a huge, huge statement. Pope Francis himself has noted several times in public interviews, that he has never refused Eucharist to anyone.
For those who hope the Church returns to it's social justice, biblical hospitality, pastoral care roots, this is welcome news, indeed.

(47,600 posts)It's especially irksome that Cordileone is in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hope this teaches him a lesson, and if that doesn't happen, it'll really piss him off. He pissed us off majorly by being behind that awful Proposition H8. How much money did he cost the church with that failed abomination?

(13,009 posts)this is Church politics (which might not be utterly without connection and crossover) but are still fairly well removed. The American Church is powerful - but (besides being quite polarized and fragmented among themselves) they in no way 'drive' the Church itself.

(8,003 posts)It is unfortunate, but church ppolitics (and not just the Roman Catholic Church - in fact it's usually "Talibangelicals" frequently intersect with American politics, despite the First Amendment.

(13,009 posts)and also that somebody other that the Church is currently doing a lot of the 'politicking' and driving the culture wars in this country. Where I would draw a distinction is that I think the 'message' sent here to this particular archbishop (and we have to accept the writer's 'interpretation" in order to read it so) - had a lot more to do with an affront given to the Pope - than it did to a particular American politician. As the editorial goes on, this is about using the sacrament as a bludgeon and a coercive measure - much more so than offending a segment of the American political landscape. (although the Pope probably isn't just real keen on that either)

(39,058 posts)... would be embraced -- places where the conservative Catholics are in direct competition with the right wing Evangelicals to see who can bring the most hate to the table, be it against non-Christian religions, homosexuals, or liberal Western Culture in general.
It would be better if Cordileone was stuffed away in a closet somewhere, removed from the general population.

(4,594 posts)Most Christian denominations figured this out a while ago; the Catholic Church has been an outlier, continuing to put restrictions on who can receive it.
Francis gets it, but even with his power as Pope I dont see him winning a long term victory over this kind of thinking. There are way too many entrenched bishops who like being able to exclude people for all sorts of reasons.

(13,776 posts)I can totally respect and admire people with differing views if those views are sincerely held and carefully considered and come from good motives. And Pope Francis has shown over and over again that he believes God is about love, not control or punishment.

(2,168 posts)But Pope Francis seems to be the number one bogeyman for those on the right, both within the Catholic Church as well as outside of it. The previous Pope, Benedict, actually gave me the creeps; he headed up the same committee within the church hierarchy that was responsible for the "Holy" Inquisition back in the day. But it seems like he was the darling of the conservative right wing. And Benedict resigned amidst a flurry of scandals and coverups that may never fully see the light of day. It seems like increasing polarization, and even alienation, of conservatives versus liberals is not just something that we see here in the US - it appears to be worldwide.

(3,684 posts)My personal views of abortion have changed with my faith.
There are many policies that the Church should have a problem with if they are going to wade into micromanaging politicians. Also, denying someone the Eucharist is very harsh.

(10,046 posts)But, seriously, do people really stay & read a page that jumps around like that one with all the obnoxious in-your-face ads?
Karma13612
(4,707 posts)On Many sites because Im not will to pay for subscriptions. These are sites where the news is accurate too. Im not talking weird ones with Right-Wing crap.
The more disjointed the internet becomes, the more difficult it is to get good quality information given in an attention-holding manner.
Same as the advertising on TV. They purposely make advertising as intrusive as possible. We lose our train of thought, and it just contributes to attention deficit scatter-brain issues. I have been watching Bosch:Legacy which is on Freeve. It is ad based but done in a really cool manner. You are notified when an ad begins. It tells you how long it will be and how many there will be. So, I simply mute the TV so I dont hear the crap. Then unmute when the ad(s) are finished. Its the next best thing to ad-free as you are going to get.
Not sure if they still do, but years ago in the UK, they used to save the ads and show them all at once at the end of the shows. IIRC. Probably not like that anymore tho.
As I said, there are so many ways that we humans in the US are exposed to chaotic, thought-scrambling, mind-numbing input.

(10,046 posts)I honestly think TV & commercials are in many ways responsible for countless deficits in our society via subtle brainwashing intended, basically, to render us incapable of reasoning. Purposely "chaotic, thought-scrambling, mind-numbing input," indeed.
I only watch programs with no commercials or things I've recorded so I can ff through them. And even that sucks because you have to see some of the ads with their insulting-to-our-intelligence techniques. My partner & take turns handling that job.
Karma13612
(4,707 posts)Feature on the remote. LOL! Probably wears out faster than all the other buttons!!
We also watch plenty of content via streaming that is ad free but subscription based. We watch less and less content on regular network television. It was mostly because the shows on the regular networks have not caught our interest. At the moment, there is only one once-weekly show that I continue to watch. Just had the finale. Next season, Fall of 22, it is its final season, 13 episodes and its done. I just havent bothered to get into anything else. We like food channel, and PBS when we discover something educational.
There are very few corners of the telecom world where we can hide away from commercialism. I remember many years ago when FM radio was gaining in popularity. Back then, the selling point for having FM stations was because they were to have fewer ads than AM. Yes, your listening experience was going to be all about the content of music.
Ahhh, we all know how that turned out!
