I was thinking tonight about how history seems to be repeating itself wrt to the War in Ukraine

and how it parallels with our own Revolutionary War.

Ukraine, as the USA in the 1770s. Fighting a war to remain Independent against a powerful nation (Russia-England) with deep roots in the country. And we are playing the role of France in this conflict. Because France wanted to see Democracy and the US to be triumphant over the prevailing English autocracy.

I would hate to see us living out the French Revolution in a few years.

at the time they were in a long running competition with England on the world stage, which would continue into the 20th Century. They had recently lost Canada and several colonies in the Caribbean and were competing in India and the Far East.

Lafayette may have been a bit of a member of the Enlightenment, but he was an aristocrat. Our revolution was pre-French Revolution, they were still a Monarchy. I don't think our system of government were their main concern at all.
