Prime Minister Justin Trudeau froze handgun sales in order to prevent his nation from becoming an armed madhouse.
While I wont abandon or betray my country, the United States, I would rather have it also become a handgun (and, hopefully, assault weapon) free zone.

Been to Toronto perhaps 30 times. It's basically a safer and cleaner Chicago with friendlier people. One thing that always struck me about Canada is how the people there are more civic minded than in the US and political discussions are not forbidden in bars and restaurants like they are here. In fact, the average dive bar in Toronto is likely to have more informative and detailed discussions about American politics than any bar in America. Canadians seem to know this stuff matters for them to have a Democracy, they're more educated about theirs and our government.

(24,207 posts)Know people from Windsor, 19 year old Americans coming through the tunnel to raise hell and drink hasn't exactly been endearing. But they're still friendly.
I still get messages or calls from Canadian friends seemingly worried about what's going on in America. I think they're looking for me for reassurance, but I just give them the truth, "You are right to be worried, American democracy is under threat and if it goes, the extremists running the country will surely target Canada in one way or another."

Thanks to Canada's liberal immigration system, 335,646 Hong Kongers moved there between 1984 when Britain's handover was declared and 1997, according to the Canadian International Council think tank. That was most of the half-million exodus.
This time, Britain may take most Hong Kongers as it offers visas to potentially 300,000 people.
The flow to Canada may also be large, with existing Canadian passport-holders in Hong Kong from the first wave and new immigration pathways for the younger generation.

Remember, before the handover in 1997, Hong Kong was a British territory; British commonwealth citizens can get expedited/preferential treatment to emigrate to other commonwealth countries.
Just trying to provide some clarity and perspective to your original claim regarding wealthy Chinese immigrants.

(13,850 posts)from 1993-1997. Most of the students at the international school I worked at had lived in Canada (and the US/Australia, but mostly Canada) for a few years to get their visa prior to 1997. When they came back, they entered an international school rather than the local government schools.
They had all gotten their ducks in a row prior to the 1997 transition back to China.
Golden Visas still exist. Countries have minimum spends to get one. I am not sure where Canada is now, but it's one of the higher price point ones. Canada doesn't have a federal program, but the province of Quebec has one of the easiest investment profiles in the country for a golden visa opportunity. "Applicants must have acquired a $2.0 million Canadian dollar net worth, agree to invest $1,200,000 Canadian dollars for 5 years, show intention to reside in Quebec and have a minimum of two years management in a company during the last five years and have had a minimum of two full-time employees."
Not easy.

US election: Don Jr told Trump supporters to have some fun before Biden vehicles rammed by armed group
Trumps eldest son called on supporters get out there, have some fun
by Gino Spocchia
The Independent, Oct. 31, 2020
A Biden campaign event was cancelled in Texas on Friday after reportedly coming under threat from armed Trump supporters, days after the presidents eldest son called on his fathers supporters to get out there, have some fun.
Don Jr posted a video earlier this week ahead of Democratic VP candidate, Kamala Harris, holding an event in Texas and urged his fathers supporters to show up.
He said: Itd be great if you guys would all get together, head down to McAllen and give Kamala Harris a nice Trump Train welcome."
Get out there, have some fun, enjoy it, Mr Trump continued.
Dont forget to vote and bring all of your friends. Lets show them how strong Texas still is as Trump country. Get out there, guys.

(24,876 posts)I am quite familiar with their requirements and restrictions.
I knew 6 years ago that I couldn't emigrate there because of my age, my job skills and my health. If they somehow ran out of truck drivers, it might have made a small difference, but I am/was too old. If I had a large enough net worth so I wouldn't be a burden on their healthcare system, I could do it, but that is not the case.
So it remains a "If I won the lottery" kind of thing.
(I've been looking onto moving to Australia and New Zealand for years, as I lived in Aus in the 70's; I know how hard it its.)

(25,667 posts)set in my ways. They have a nursing shortage in Canada and do need nurses. If I was younger I might actually do it. I was talking with a friend in Toronto about how our non for profit hospice I work for got bought out by a for profit hospice and she was blown away at the idea of for profit hospice. I told her they thought they would impress us in the introduction meeting by telling us they were excited to enter "the Chicago marketplace". Too effing stupid to understand that chaplains, social workers, CNAs and nurses are not impressed with your "marketplace" and your shareholders. Oh and the top two tiers of the organization are ALL white men.
I get the feeling our health care is going to get worse.

Views of cornfields, trees, farms. Slightly rolling hills to plains. It did take about an hour longer to make the trip from Durham, but a lot of that was traffic getting into Charleston from the north side of the bridge.
I couldn't live that remote, but I enjoyed the drive and only saw one Impeach Biden sign. No pro Trump signs at all.

(55,334 posts)I don't think emigrating to Canada is "betraying" America. That's a little too over the top for me. People should be free to move to any country where they think they'll live a better life. But moving ain't for me.
I think we take too many advantages that come with being American for granted. I'm still with Bill Clinton who said "There's nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed with what's right with America. We have huge problems, but we also have big hearts and the capacity for huge solutions.

I try to do my part by voting and mobilising people over here to vote, always for Democrats, of course. I also reach out online to American friends living in the US and always strive to motivate them as well.
