Does my logic make sense here?

Maybe y'all can help me with this.

We've all heard conservatives say things like "Gun control laws don't work. Criminals don't obey laws. You're only hurting law-abiding citizens," or some variation of that.

I think we should use their own arguments against them. For example: "Voter ID laws don't work. If some criminal is going to commit voter fraud, a law won't stop them, because criminals don't obey laws. You're only hurting law-abiding voters."

Or: "Anti-abortion laws don't work, because criminals don't obey laws. Someone seeking an abortion is going to get one no matter what."

I know these statements wouldn't change any of the hardcore rightwinger's minds, but it might make other people think. It at least points out their hypocrisy.

I also like to point out to the government-hating types that the police are an agency of the government, as are the military.

As we've seen over and over.

Good reasoning in your post.

obviously, interfering with the logistics of committing a crime is going to make it harder to successfully commit that crime, and would likely deter at least some people from even attempting it.

that's literally the entire point of security. any security expert will tell you that you can't prevent a truly determined person from committing a crime. but you can make it difficult or deter them by making it clear there will be consequences.

right-wing rhetoric is chock full of simplistic, idiotic phrases that don't stand up to logic, common sense, or evidence.

but that doesn't stop them from repeated them ad nauseum, and it doesn't stop the media from amplifying their b.s.

I've often used that reasoning on them, too.

If criminals don't obey laws, then why do we need ANY laws at all? Why is murder illegal? Murderers are gonna murder.

Usually all I get back are blank stares. Maybe it starts to dawn on some of them....

All anybody or any government can do is not to make it easy for them, institute mitigation which is what gun restriction is. We in Canada know that we cannot stop all gun violence but we sure as hell try to make it tougher on the criminal in both obtaining the weapons and charging them if they are caught with an illegal weapon. Nothing will change the hardcore minds of the "gun rights advocates" but there are a lot of people who have been brain washed into believing everybody should have the right to carry and that is who's mind needs to be changed.
