(15,031 posts)can't remember where it was now, but we were seated at a picnic table next to a lake. Across the water, a hill of grass rose gently up.
As we sat there, a herd of bison came over the crest and made its way to the water's edge. It was one of the most majestic sights I've ever seen. But from a couple hundred yards away, with a large body of water between us, I knew I was as close to those behemoths as I cared to be. Beautiful sight, best seen from afar.

(86,509 posts)As a former park ranger and gate community resident, all I can say is it's amazing this doesn't happen more often. Just wait till they start getting eaten by the bears.
I have been in scary situations with these creatures and it was mostly luck that left me unharmed. I have been stampeded and charged by them, had to run for cover more than once while in uniform, they hate NPS folks in uniform, and seen them attack NPS vehicles. Never saw anyone get flung but told a couple people who got themselves flung that they should keep their distance shortly before they got flung.
These are WILD animals. WILD means they are unpredictable and potentially harmful.
You can warn people about their safety and it goes right by them like an off ramp at high speed. I think it's the high elevation, not enough oxygen for their 1.5 functioning brain cells to keep up.
