(21,596 posts)He has two siblings who are also the Queens 1st cousins: HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent.
Their father died in an airplane crash when they were very young. Their mother was Princess Marina of Kent, who was born a Princess of Greece & Denmark.
The Dukes wife, Duchess of Kent, was the Patron of Wimbledon for many years before retiring from life as a working royal.

(9,256 posts)Now I remember, their father was a younger brother to King George VI and King Edward VIII (the one who abdicated).

This was not the life she chose; it was the life chosen for her.

(51,308 posts)She looks like a piece of Wedgewood china in that ensemble.
And little Charlotte looks so much like the Queen at that age.
PatSeg
(47,260 posts)that she seems to be looking younger and certainly more relaxed as she gets older. I'm not a huge royalty fan, but I must say I do admire Queen Elizabeth.

Of the royal family. Harry and Meg no longer take part in the work performed by what the Queen has referred to as The Firm.

Prince Phillip was very handsome as a young man; William too. Kate is gorgeous.
Plenty of good looks for those who need that kind of thing on which to judge a person's worth.

(19,468 posts)The ones from centuries ago are surprising. It's not so surprising that someone has a long reign in modern times, with modern medicine.

(5,717 posts)She is only topped by Prince Rainier of Monaco who was 25 years 11 months. Many of the others were under 10 or in their early teens. She's has had mobility issues lately but, unlike a lot of people who were married for many years, she didn't fade away quickly when Phillip died like I expected. As a 60 year old Canadian, I'd like to see us give up the monarchy when she goes, but I know that will probably never happen in my lifetime.

(54,281 posts)Not many people get to do that. Of course, I had to bust my ass to get things done--still do. This week, for example: Monday I was in Spain, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Netherlands, today in Paris, and tomorrow in northern Germany. There is no rest for the weary.
On the other hand, I get to run our European operations, give our guys here a LOT of autonomy, which they love, and it makes them bust their asses, too. I speak everyone's language, so no Americans here other than myself. The pay is good for being able to do something I like to do, plus all the vacation time I want or need, plus additional time to take care of family members if they have medical emergencies. All work travel is paid, and my expenses are never questioned. I never screw them, and in return they never question me. I got recruited a year out of college. I had the right skills, spoke the right languages, and they were liberal enough to let me do things my way and see if they worked out, instead of insisting I do things their way, and then blame me if they didn't work out.
The only current downside is that I am looking for a replacement, and having no luck. I painted myself into a corner as far as job security goes: I made myself so difficult to replace that it is now almost impossible. With the perks and the good pay, you'd think people would be lining up around the block to apply for the position. All you need is English native language, an EU residence permit, an EU work permit, permission to live and work in the USA, too, if necessary, and fluency, or near fluency, in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, at least one Scandinavian laguage, at least one Slavic language (preferrably Russian or Polish), and, if possible, Catalan. So, in essence, I have a great job that I'm probably stuck in for as long as I live.
Still, if the alternative is a job you hate for as long as you live, or no job at all, well, that made the choice to stick with this job REALLY easy for me!

(54,281 posts)The two most important things in life: my family and my work--now THERE I hit the jackpot both times.
Oh, and one time a friend in California asked me to buy some raffle tickets to help out a children's hospital she had done some volunteer work for, so I bought five $10 tickets. I won the grand prize, which was a week in Hawaii. Only--the trip had to originate in Oakland, CA. I just didn't have time that year. However, a friend from the Netherlands was going to travel to San Francisco that year, so I asked him if he and his wife wanted to tack on a trip to Hawaii. They said SURE!! and so I had the winning tickets changed to their names. The USA taxes such winnings, but since I wasn't going to take the trip, I sure wasn't going to pay any taxes on it! The Netherlands doesn't tax lottery winnings, so he and his wife got to take the trip unencumbered.

(54,281 posts)The next time you see it, Donald Trump will post it and claim that it's the crowd at his inauguration.
Never mind the flags. Trumpanzees never noticed Russian flags at their rallies, so there's no reason he would notice those those flags aren't American (dey got da right colors, don't dey?).
