"flipping" generally means pair vs. overcards, even though the pair is actually slightly ahead, typically around 52%.

in truth, a hand like ace of diamonds, two of hearts is 53% vs. hellmuth's hand, but people don't call that a flip. the see the ace as "ahead" even though there's not much difference between that and an underpair.


once cruz effectively admits he had an underpair, all hellmuth has to do is figure which underpairs cruz is likely to play that way. is cruz likely to raise a pair of deuces? i don't think so. most weak pairs, people love to just call, see a cheap flop, and hope they hit a set. same is likely true even for pocket 8s.

so 99 is really the only hand that makes sense.

that said, identifying someone's hand is still impressive when it happens in real time.

limping with king-ten suited is not a play an expert like hullmuth would normally make. experts don't normally limp, period (other than in some cases when folded to in the small blind).

so him doing this is exploitative, meaning he thinks the other players at the table are bad players.


then, limp folding to cruz's raise with a good suited hand that flops well is super-exploitative. again, hellmuth would never fold here against a decent player.


all of which means, hellmuth has determined that cruz is a very bad poker player. in this case, not capable of raising with bluffs or weaker hands.


while i respect hellmuth's incredible technical abilities, i've never been a fan because of his unprofessional personal behavior at the table. that said, i love his play, which indicates that he thinks cruz is an idiot.
