Is the devistation from Sandy going to eclipse that from Katrina?

Is the devistation going to dwarf the devistation of previous storms?

We already know the response is far superior as is shown by the responses from republicans.


Edit to change title for clarity that I was asking about the devistation, not the overall disaster as Katrina disaster involved the poor response by bush and Co. This is not going to be part of the equation this time.

1. I think no disaster is going to eclipse Katrina

this storm may have done more damage over a wider landscape and be more expensive but the complete failure of the Federal government is what made Katrina more of a disaster than mother nature created and unless someone like Mitt Romney wins the Presidency and privatizes FEMA, I can't see a future hurricane disaster compare to Katrina.

If the citizens of New Orleans had been given help right away Katrina would be a faded memory right now. What made Katrina infamous forever was a broken FEMA and the President who deliberately broke it.

6. Katrina Was A Manmade Disaster...

The worst storm damage from Katrina happened in Mississippi...New Orleans was the results of years of neglect in the canal system that led to a failure. We're 24 hours out from Sandy and while the devestation is bad it's nothing like what was just developing at this point in NOLA. The flood waters that swept into lower Manhattan the other night started to flow back out within hours...in the soup bowl known as New Orleans the water stayed for the better part of a month until it was pumped out. From what I was seeing, the worst flood waters may have been 4 or 5 feet high in New Jersey...it was 20 plus in NOLA and covered a vast portion of the city. The flooding from Sandy was limited to the coastal areas and barrier islands. I was also noticing that there were a lot of beach homes on the Jersey shore that were up on stilts...prepared for a storm surge...no such luck to those living in the lower 9th.

Yes the damage from Sandy was bad and it will take weeks and months to clean up, but this is far from any Katrina and especially of the tragedy that happened to NOLA. Also a big difference between the booooosh era FEMA and what it is today. Right now there's money and assistance flowing into the affected areas...at this point in Katrina there were ice trucks driving all over the country since they couldn't get into the area...temporary mobile homes were mildewing in Arkansas. Thank goodness the rushpublicans aren't in power...

7. In terms of area of destruction

and the amount of people effected, yes. A major part of the story with Katrina was the absolute failure of local and federal governments in anticipation and response. That is not happening here.

At least 1,833 people died. (I believe the death toll was actually higher.)

Katrina was a HORROR show. For the people who lived it and the rest of us who witnessed its destruction in real time on television. Watching it slowly but steadily approach and engulf New Orleans was apocalyptic. The resulting carnage and abject failure of FEMA to react was gruesome.

Katrina is in a category all its own. I hope I never again witness anything like it.

it had to be because of the response. That's also what lead to many of the deaths. This covered a much larger area in geography and pounded very high population centers. That's what is worse.
