But to the extent it's used for hunting, it's for "varmints" like raccoons or coyotes.

don't need 30 rounds. I went raccoon hunting with my friends grandpa when I was a kid he would kill the treed raccoon with a ..22 bolt action rifle.

Of course if you are a lousy shot or unwilling to take the time to line up your shot you can always spray 20 bullets at it. Don’t worry about where your misses land.

I will say that when you're going after small, fairly nimble pests like raccoons, a quick followup shot it useful - hence the evergreen popularity of the Ruger 10/22. Which, despite being a semi-auto rifle, is in no way shape or form an assault weapon - it's even legal in the UK!

They used to make a .44 carbine with a rotary magazine. I always wanted one, never got one.
I agree, a .22LR is definitely not in assault rifle territory...not enough muzzle velocity or energy.

The good news is that those of us living within Colorado's new CD8 are working hard to elect a representative we can be proud of. There is an excellent Democrat running against Buck in CD4; the problem is that the district has its political head so far up trumpism's ass that they can't see or smell the garbage that is Buck's legacy. It bears mentioning that Buck's first job out of law school was in the office of then congressman Dick Cheney; wouldn't be surprised to have Buck demand that the deceased raccoon's ghost apologize for getting in front of the weapon.

Seems to me that if the raccoon or coyote was after your chickens at, say, 1130 PM after a relaxing nightcap, that AR 15 might also take a few chickens out along with the varmint.

I grew up in a rural area. Every farmer had a shotgun, and that shotgun did the job just fine.

Maybe we've just got a lot of people who don't know how to shoot and are too lazy to learn. Or are just using it as an excuse. We spoke with a hunter the other day. He goes to Wisconsin in the fall, and when he goes out in the field he brings six bullets with him. All it takes is one to kill an animal if you know what you're doing, he said.

Raccoon trying to find it's way through my coop fencing.

It was.......underwhelming. Now I just use better fencing, and a .22 rimfire for the occasional predator. Same effect, and 1/10 the ammo cost and noise. So not exactly the "gun of choice" for farm use, IMO.

So then... we just HAVE to have the mass-shootings. How else will rural folk kill any varmints?! 😐
