Florida Gov. Ron DeSantiss administration Thursday asked the state board regulating doctors to essentially ban transitioned-related care for transgender minors, according to a letter obtained by NBC News.
The move from the Florida Department of Health came hours after another state agency issued a 46-page report to justify banning Medicaid coverage for transgender people of any age who want puberty blockers, hormone therapies or gender-assignment surgery.
The two-pronged effort, which ensures DeSantis can act quickly and without the need for legislative approval, drew instant opposition from trans activists and medical professionals. Theyve increasingly clashed with the Republican governor as he seeks reelection and builds a national brand as a culture warrior and potential 2024 White House contender.
Leading the charge for DeSantis: Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, who oversees the Department of Health.

(17,003 posts)If he goes through with this it will prevent military families with transgender children from moving to the state because they will not be able to get medical care. As a licensed mental health provider in the state of Florida Im beyond pissed.

(16,858 posts)He seems to be creating his own little theocratic dictatorship down there and the scary part to me is that this can't be happening in a vacuum; he must have a ton of dedicated sycophants who are helping him in his quest for this power. If DeSantis is allowed to unleash this crap on the US, the damage may be irreparable.

(46,703 posts)Relevant to S. Florida and discussions here on DU. If his background is strong in the Cuban American culture then he is influenced by a cultural acceptance of authoritarianism. Which means that what were seeing is the merging of the worst of two cultures. Trumpism + whatever translates to Trumpism in the Cuban American culture. Maybe something to do with Bautista.
Wish we had an expert to look into this. I grew up in Latin America and I thought Trump was hitting the same notes as a banana Republican leader. And then De Santis shows up and says, hold my beer.

(46,703 posts)My liberal views, which are enormously influenced by my experiences as a minority, became an issue for the wife of one of my husbands friends. They were wealthy enough to fly down to Florida every weekend to watch their sons college games. We barely saw our son four times a year. Summer, thanksgiving, Christmas and parents weekend. So, I think people who can connect more than we can are truly blessed. I dont harbor ill will. Happy for them and I truly appreciate the time I have with my kids.
Now, this friends wife has dropped lots of unkind comments. In the early years, when we talked politics, she would smugly remind me that our college leaned conservative. Another time she said that she couldnt see herself going on vacation with someone who she didnt have a lot in common with because it would be uncomfortable, or maybe not restful. I dont remember which. But we never have gone on vacation together.
Jump twenty years to a dinner where they said that their daughter was marrying another girl. I have to itemize the weirdness that ensued:
1) another frat brother laughed hysterically and made one insulting question after another. Who wears the dress? He just reeled ithem off one after the other. I reminded him that this was his close friends child and he was sitting across from us, hence part of the conversation. It didnt matter.
2) They learned that one of my gay friends recently married and they asked questions about the wedding. I described It to them and reminded them that one wedding did not make me an expert.
3) I realized that the mother was having trouble with her daighters gay orientation. I was thinking how hard it must have been for the daughter to come out and said, Its easier when you have someone else in the family who is also gay, I was referring to the daughter coming out. (In my gay nephews case, he had an uncle from his fathers side. We all knew and were just waiting for him to pick his moment. Sadly, something happened in the news and he had a meltdown on Facebook, angrily coming out in a discussion with his Catholic school high school classmates. But we all embraced him.) But, back to the mother of the bride, she processed my comment in the worst way possible. Are you saying its hereditary? Jesus.
4) At the end of the dinner I congratulated them and said their children had good taste. (They had also shown pictures of the straight son who was also getting married.) She looked away in disgust.
So, yeah. I would have never guessed that people my age would still have these hang ups, but here we are.

(5,969 posts)Should medical procedures be banned based on public opinion, especially when a majority of the public admits that they lack sufficient knowledge about the issue?
